A few days in HKG- where to stay?
 

Hey guys,

Am looking at using Staff Travel for a short 5 day trip to HKG soon.

Not having been there, what locations should I be looking at in order to be central for things such as:
- ease of public transport,
- proximity to good markets and shopping,
- proximity to main tourist sights/ attractions.

I've got a preliminary list of:
- Novotel Hong Kong Century (Jaffe Rd, Wanchai),
- Hotel Ibis (North Point),
- Vovotel Hong Kong (nathan Rd, Kowloon).

Your local knowledge would be very much appreciated!

The hotel on Nathan road will put you in the middle of things on Kowloon. The proximity and ease of transportation is not a major consideration as everything is close by and cabs are cheap. I guess it depends where you will be spending most of your time - HK island has more tourist sights but part of the charm of HK is just wandering about.

For something completely different try the USRC on Kowloon side close to Jordan Station on the MTR. Access by taxi from Kowloon Station on the airport express. Price very reasonable and great facilities and food. Popular with ex-HK residents but only limited number of rooms so get in early.

Stay in Wan Chai for proximity to the bars. The Novotel is OK but Luk Kwok Hotel is better location and value. Neptune 2 is across the road, taxis are easy to get and 2 min walk to MTR station, 5 min walk to buses to Stanley market etc. Also 5 min walk to Wan Chai ferry terminal. Novotel is pretty good just extra 2 or 3 min walk.

Don't listen to the voice of reason! You will end up in Wan Chai every late night/early morning (or midday?) anyway and that Wan Chai Novotel is just 2 blocks away from Neptune II.

Besides, the Wanch is perfectly well connected to everywhere by bus or subway, that hotel (and a zillion others nearby) is relatively cheap, and there is lots more to the area than the late-night partying and ladies of the night

Wan Chai Rule of Thumb: Do not step foot into any bar with curtains at the door and/or bikini-clad greeters unless you want to be easily scammed out of 1000's of HKD per minute, seriously and immediately enforced by big guys, so just stick to all the "normal" busy bars full of hard working entrepreneurial tourists ladies hoping you are stupid enough to fund their fake drinking needs and that you can't convert HKD's into triple digit USD to realize the excessively ridiculous rip offs they are attempting sell you on).

No matter where you stay, you will have to move around so make sure you at least figure out the MTR, Airport Express and Octopus system ahead of time.

You all forgot to mention the best part of HK.......V1 :ok:

Some amazing world class dining in Hong Kong, with tax free booze and good shopping. There's a holiday in itself from expensive Australia! A pub meal in Oz costs the same as a degustation at a three star michelin restaurant in HKG.

Lots to do and see. Perhaps not in DB. :}

When the booze went tax free in HK the price remained virtually unchanged ( typical HK ) and apart from infinitely more different booze to choose from in Oz, places like Dan Murphies are cheaper too, give me some examples and I'll show you.
Everything is expensive in Oz because you are being paid in a currency that has the same value as toilet paper, and anyway, clean air and room to move have a price.
Enjoy the next 6 months of choking pollution.

What's this got to do with 'aviation in Hong Kong'? Obviously booze and good hotels is on the 'ok' list for people to discuss if they wish, it's a shame Christians aren't afforded the same courtesy.

It's pretty obvious why people don't like threads about God, it confronts their conscience. It suggests an accountability to a higher power that most people, especially confident pilot types, find distasteful.

I was yawning because you do not know what you are talking about. And I doubt you ever dined above Pizza Express in your tenure in HKG.

You are showing gross ignorance in the booze department. I can buy wine for 50% cheaper in Hong Kong than you can in Australia.

And do you seriously believe Dan Murphys can match the ability to ship wine from anywhere in the world to HKG tax free. It can't. A foreign wine at Dan Murphys is three to four times more expensive than HKG.

Actually, one way the thread author could redeem his airfares from Oz is to take his duty free allowance of wine back to Australia at the high end and flog it off to ripped off Aussies.

Try getting out of Tetsuyas or Rockpool in Sydney for under $300AUD for dinner and wine. You can dine here in HKG at similar or better quality for far less- just BYO your cheap booze!

Avoid the Headland etc, unless you are grandparents who are primarily focused on visiting kids/grand-kids in TC or DB.

USRC is a good choice. But it seems to be booked up most of the time.

I have used agoda.com for years around Asia. If you can commit to booking set dates for check in - check out, then this is a booking forum which delivers good choice and value. Be wary of "kid unfriendly" hotels btw (more than one kid means two rooms).

Location near the MTR would be an advantage. If it is significantly cheaper to stay in Kowloon, then ensure that the location is close to the MTR etc.

Are there any cheaper options near the airport apart from the Novotel? It's far too expensive. I need to be close to the airport for the three days I'm there! Any takers?

Try the Regal Airport Hotel.
Connected by walkway to the terminal.
Another option is the Auberge in Discovery Bay.
Newly opened about 25 minutes by shuttle bus to the Airport.
