iPhone/iPad apps?
I'm always interested in trying out new Apps on my iPhone. The best place to find out about new apps seems to be in the flight deck comparing apps with the guy next to me.
I was recently shown a cool app which decoded the Russian runway condition reports (among other things). I can't seem to find it on the app store. Does anyone know the apps name? While you are at it, perhaps you could post the names of your favourite apps aviation and non-aviation related. My current fav's are: VLC - A great way to watch your AVI/MP4/MKV video files on your iPhone/iPad. iTunes is too restrictive and you have to convert all of your files to .m4v to watch or worse, you have to BUY/RENT movies...the horror! Air Video - Stream video's from your desktop at home to your iPhone/iPad anywhere in the world via 3G or Wifi. LogBookTen - App to record your flight times. Hippo - Turns your iPhone into a mouse/keyboard. Great if you hook your laptop up to your TV to watch video's and are too lazy (me) to get up to start the next video or to reply to an email/instant message. 5-0 Radio - Listen to emergency services scanners, atc, and internet radio via 3G/WiFi. Anyone else care to share their fav's? I haven't pulled the trigger on an iPad yet but am looking forward to getting the next generation iPad whenever it comes out. Soon I hope?! |
PToolbox and Snowtam both decode runway reports and have the option of giving a Russian braking action.

PToolbox
Seems to be written by either a Swissair pilot or ops staff member. the Russian runway decode is excellent Just did the latest update a few hours ago. |
Air Nav Pro
Think it was designed by a Lufthansa pilot. Neatly uses GPS capability in iPhone and iPad with downloadable maps. Useful aid when doing rec flying. |
Neither PToolbx nor Air Nav Pro show up on the search engine of itunes in Hong Kong.
Did you get it from another country? |
Downloaded my iPhone version in HKG from my iPhone. I then transferred it to the iPad via iTunes on my Mac but I had to re-download the maps via iPad via wireless.
Try to Google Air Nav Pro and see what they say. Forgot how I found it on my iPhone originally but it was no problem. Just checked again. Go to the apps icon and go to search. Just type in 'air nav' and press go. |
A complete one is "Airports"
It gives airports data, atis, rwy size, taf/metar, notam, international volmets, tools including snotam decoder, rwy state decoder, wind comp, approach angle and you can add notes to your favorite airport like webcam links and so on. These for 2.5 € :ok: "PToolbox" is nice for deicing holdover time. "jet Fueling" to compute your... petrol of course job for dummies... :E Happy Landings |
I can't find Ptoolbox either and I use a Canadian iTunes account. Lame...

Another great Software for long night flights is Distant Sun, an Astronomy Software. Highly recommended :ok: |
Downloaded "Airports" looks handy. Do you think they'll mind me using it on my line check!? ;)
Distant Sun looks cool but it's 9.99US. Is it worth it? |
I use
Star Walk - $$$? Great for viewing stars and galaxies at night away from HK. HK Movie - gives all movie info for free around HK iWeather - Free for weather info around HK. HK Junkcalls - sends a directory of annoying marketing calls from HK. Whenever a number comes up it's shows Junkcall and I don't answer On-time HK - for ferry timetable and some bus info Aeroweather - for Metars and Taf's Plants vs Zombies Angry Birds Pinball HD iSamJackson - gives most of his one liners - the R rated version costs $$$ AppBox Pro - good general utilities |
Quick question about Jeppesen Mobile TC on the iPad.
It needs a serial number upon start up. CX's subscription is just a username and password. Any ideas? |
