B-HIH's last job.

B-HIH in Kemble.

BBC News - Boeing 747 survives simulation bomb blast

A bit pointless seeing it's not pressurised.

B-HIH

Agree with a pressurised hull and what seamed to be a number of windows moving in the video shot.
How many of the missing rivets were caused by the skin flexing after the explosion??

Tests have been done previously with very differing results when the hull is partially pressurised.
It's all good info but I think what was seen on the video could possibly have been done in a lab to show the flexability of the duraluminium skin and frames.

Isn't it amazing what duct tape will do !! I think they should have put some around the doors, though.

On the beach :ok:

Agree all a bit pointless...also at one of the stronger areas of the fuselage....would have been more realistic if it were pressurised. Also in the location that the explosion was carried out the floor is thinner the outside skin there is much thicker.

Used to enjoy flying on HIH as flt mech...Always found it (along with HIF) to give less trouble than HID/E.

Not to mention they used a Boeing and the X-mass plot was on an Airbus. :}

Pretty pointless use of resources me thinks.

maybe the whole thing was more of a "see, it won't work anyways" display for non-educated wannabe copycat bombers ...

mephisto88 5th Mar 2010 22:36

fd188 - I'm with you on that one. I'd like to think the people who organised the test know it would not have been realistic due to the pressurisation aspect.
I agree it's more likely to be "If you want to blow it up, take more explosive, or find another way" ie hopefully easier for the detection systems to find a large amount of explosives wrapped around mohammeds nuts than the amount that slipped through previously.
Not many are under any illusion as to what may have happened were the same test to have been conducted in a pressurised hull.

Just a publicity stunt to pacify the great unwashed. About as re-assuring to me as being told that in case of landing on water, there is a lifejacket under my seat.
