Aero Club or flying school in HK?
 

Hi all,

Moving to HK in 3 months for work and want to be able to keep current and do some flying there. Can anyone put me in the right direction

As you can see, it's not cheap and any flying is at weekends only and can be cancelled at the whim of the Peoples Liberation Army Air Wing who run the airfierld at Sek Kong.

Hey Dan. I was afraid that this was the only place someone was going to come back to me with.. What a nightmare of a scenario, the membership fee and monthly fee adds up to just over 50000 hkd for 1 year plus flight fees and I might only be there for 1 year. Is this my only option?

Unfortunately the HKAC is the only option available when it comes to private flying in HKG. I have heard of some people who chose to fly in the Philippines though - apparently it is not expensive, and two-way airline tickets are not too costly either. Check this out:

Omni Aviation

Forget the HK Aviation Club, it is a completely useless organization! All they want are silent members who pay their monthly dues so that a few on top of the food chain can enjoy flying priviliges. Try www.thaiflyingclub.com just south of BKK, or Omni in the Phils as someone already mentioned.

Or this one. There are a couple of Cessnas there too.

Only problem at Angeles is that hats must be worn. Flip flops are OK though.

Another option is the flying school in Zhuhai, China (very close to Hong Kong). Much cheaper than flying in the Philippines. I forgot their web site, do your own search.

The Hong Kong Aviaton club used to be an excellent flying club, I was a member for 33 years, unfortunately with the closure of Kai Tak it was inevitable that the momentum of operations declined somewhat as all flying had to be (and still is) conducted at Sek Kong in the New Territories a former RAF airfield now operated by the Chinese Air Force. They tend to be less than accomodating than the RAF although one has to say that at least they allow private flying to continue to some extent. As has been mentioned previously the club is expensive, as are flying fees, but then AVGAS has to be imported from Singapore amongst other considerations. I know several people who fly at Omni Aviation at Clarke Air Base, I understand that it is inexpensive to get to (round trip from Hong Kong International Airport about HK500) and flying fees are about HK$ 700 per hour. Hong Kong - no. Hong Kong is not a flexible place. The first word uttered by most officials is "Cannot". You will have to convert.
