Cathay disables Airshow (moving map)

Just in on the 827 from Toronto on which the airshow was disabled during the entire flight due to latest "security concerns." Crew (both flight and cabin) told me it was system wide. Does anyone know who made this stunning decision? Is it temporary or likely to be permanent? I am stunned and saddened that CX has fallen for the knee jerk horse has bolted type of action we usually only see in the US.
I cannot believe that anyone with knowledge of aviation really thinks that the airshow gives would be bombers information that could help them with their plots. sad situation all round in my view!

Oh dear, atm1710 - how old are you?

I have lived a little longer I suspect, and know that the TSA has no influence on how an airline operates it's a/c, either within, over, the US or anywhere else. There's another bunch of bureaucratick f%ckwits called the FAA that does this for and on behalf of the US Proletariat....

And while we are on the subject - at what level can a government influence what data is displayed on an IFE system when an a/c is in-flight, isn't it that either international law or the home-territoy law applies - like the HK Gov?

Can any air-lawyers advise?

Any chance you could be a little more condescending? By your own admission you have been around a long time, so maybe it's time you learn some manners.

Well something's up - Airshow is deactivated on all flights.

For once this was not a cx decision. There is a directive issued by the Department of Homeland security that stated the airshow had to be disabled and crew were not to broadcast the position or point out landmarks to the pax.
Also in the directive, pax were to be seated 1 hr before landing and not allowed to go to the toilet. There were not allowed to access their hand luggage or have anything on their lap inculing blankets and pillow 1 hr before landing on any US bound or flights from the US.
All rushed in to make the general public feel safer :ugh:

bigjames 30th Dec 2009 03:50

So why was this system wide on all routes? As I understand, this includes routes such as HK-TPE in a 330 that will never go to the US? Indeed the flight I was on was from Canada to HK and at no time passed through US airspace. And of course there were none of the other restrictions mentioned. ie pax moved around happily until seatbelt sign came on at the usual time. I cannot believe US dep't of Homeland Security can control all of CX's flights!
(not to mention my previous point about the stupidity of banning airshow even in the US!)

I think they have already relaxed some of the knee-jerk items like staying in seat for the last hour. Probably some incontinent passengers have caused that to change.

Don't see them taking watches off people or demanding that window blinds stay down though you can't make PA's with city names or positions over ground within USA.

Why do we all have to suffer because there's a jih@d targeting the US ?

Confusion fills skies after attempted bombing - Yahoo! News

it was now up to captains on each flight to decide whether passengers can have blankets and other items on their laps or can move around during the final phase of flight...On some flights, passengers were told to keep their hands visible and not to listen to iPods...crew announced that the toilets would be shut down the last hour of the flight and passengers would not be able eat, drink, or use electronic devices...

This is all airlines , pitty as I really enjoyed the info

ALPHA FLOOR 30th Dec 2009 10:10

Why Airshow is disabled network wide is beyond me - the USA is semi-understandable but between HKG - BKK? Where's the NTC explaining this?

Its amazing we are trusted to know where we are but are banned liquids, nailclippers etc:D

777300ER 30th Dec 2009 12:24

Can somebody remind me how many actual threats have been averted at the airport security level??

turnandburn 30th Dec 2009 13:37

its displayed on the airphone anyway, different circuit. HHHMMM

And all because some deranged Nigerian set his testicles on fire to honour Allah.:D
Considering his old dad had been telling anyone who would listen to lock him up cos he was a psycho, he must be a centred individual

Fat lot of fun he will have in paradise with his 50 virgins when he has burnt his nuts off. Best of luck setting an aircraft interior on fire nowadays, the burn test requirements on seat covers and carpets are rather severe. It's not so long ago when there was a smokers section on all flights. Cigarette lighters, litre bottles of duty free. Somehow we managed not to annhialate the world.:ugh:

If these camel humpers can't act civil they should not be allowed travel, I am all for profiling.:ok:

no NTC so our procedures don't change.....the US needs to change it's foreign policy though.

gobbledock 30th Dec 2009 22:31

Possible Reason

Perhaps people in high level circles were concerned that maybe CX's very own 'The Management' would have his/her location revealed to disgruntled Drivers via the Airshow ?

Ex Cathedra 31st Dec 2009 11:12

That retard was actually on a CIA list, and yet managed to get on an american aircraft without so much of a pat down...

All the security measure the TSA and others have had us endure for years have yet again proven to be useless. The only guys actually able to stop these idiots are the CIA and other intelligence agencies, and again, they've just show how useless they are at their job, so the TSA and FAA happily come up with new and improved ways to f#*k everybody's day, except the terrorists, of course.

If it keeps going that way, the gringos will have us fly naked and chained to the seats in a few years time...

I can hear the sound of stable door hinges squeaking in the wind!!!
I assume that the so called department of home land stupidity will be paying the airlnes not to have airshow and a refund on the expensive systems they have bought.....I thought not.....there again a hand held GPS in the cabin works in any case (by the window)....

Also in the directive, pax were to be seated 1 hr before landing and not allowed to go to the toilet. There
That has been the rule going into KDCA for the last 8 years.
