Surf in HK?
 

Hi All

I am about to start on the next Cadet course in ADL, so I though I would indulge myself in some general research on Hong Kong. To my surprise and delight I found out there is a surf beach on the east coast, ‘Big Wave Bay’.

Does anyone know if this beach regularly catches descent swell?

Are there any other places in HK to surf?

What are the eastern beaches in Taiwan Like?

I appreciate any information.

Does it cost a lot for CX employees to travel on CX flights to Asian surfing destinations?

As a wet behind the ears SO will I have time to jet set over Asia in between sim rides, ground school and scheduled flights? Or will I need to wait until I have all my line training squared away?

Sure does, someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but no staff travel for 6 months. Of course, if you believe your new whinging boss, the full fares are all cheap as chips :hmm:

You describe yourself as a wet behind the ears SO. Your post certainly does justice to your description!

Pass the course first. It is not a walk in the park. There will be more work to do and systems, procedures and general "Cathay Way" to learn before you will be deemed suitable for release to the line.

Do yourself a favour and leave the surf board at home till you are fully checked out.

Many of us are getting sick and tired of the new generation that has no Officer Qualities and believes the world owes them a living.

You sound like a prime candidate for the 777, you'll be eaten for breakfast on the 744 and Airbus!

ignore max reheat , bring your boards there's surf at tai long wan, sai kiung country park, it faces SE and is best in winter and occasionally in summer with typhoon low pressure activitivity, enough to satisfy a surf and paddle , sometimes actually gets quite good

Enjoy yourself if you find an activity that you like in Hkg.
Survival rule 1
Until you are sure of the skipper don't talk about your extracurricular activites.
Sometimes it's almost like they get their back up because you are actually enjoying life. Or if you show that you can make some money in your spare time e.g the stock market.
And before every skipper gets annoyed I'm referring to some notable individuals not most of them. And to make the skippers happy I'd have to agree that some of the new generation Forget to demonstrate the fact that they are actually professional before they describe their extensive leisure activities.

Staff Travel
1st 6months - you can use it, but only between your port of joining and Hong Kong and only on CX. As a cadet your port of joining is ?????hkg maybe Also you must pay upfront for your tickets for the first 6 months.

Google "wannasurf" and all will be revealed. hkg surf dosn't do much for me, indo on the other hand.... Not bad advice from the guy who said "learn first, surf second", and I'd add to that, that if your dealing with someone from the uk, who's wearing long sleeves, never miss a chance to keep your mouth shut. enjoy

Hi Mopar,

Adding onto what others have mentioned. South Lantau has a wave. Cheung Sha being popular and Pui O beach the pick during some typhoon swell, in fact there is swell today. I know guys surfing off Tap Mun, an island north of Tai Long Wan. Stand up paddle is picking up on Lantau as well.

Hainan is supposed to have waves and with direct flights to Bali you'll have plenty of time to surf when you're an SO.

In my opinion you need to have an interest outside of work, all the guys and girls who do seem to be the happiest.

Don't stop surfing during the training or after it. It's not that difficult!

There are waves here but you need to get out and chase them.

I appreciate the input from every one on this thread. Due to my current job I have been living in country Australia for the last four years and on average have only managed to surf a handful of times a year.

I can’t tell you how happy I am that there is surf in HK (even if it is poor quality surf in polluted water). I look forward to sharing a wave with you all.
