Advice on leaving CX

I have had a few recent job offers from employers back home and I'm now considering leaving CX. SLIGHTLY less pay for SIGNIFICANTLY less stress & Bull Sh@#$T. I find it very discouraging when I speak to other F/O's that I fy with and 95% of them are either leaving, looking for work elsewhere, or regret ever joining but refuse to give up their seniority and start again somewhere else. I don't want to invest years of my life to a job that I will end up depising & regretting.

I worked very hard to get to Cathay and I really do think it's an excellent airline. Unfortunately the goal-posts seem to be moving constantly. Between; COS08, RA65, Pax DEFO, Integrated ASL, UFO "C Scales", significantly delayed commands, horrible exchange rates, the carcenogenic air in Hong Kong, uncertainty about basings, the extremely intimidating checking & "training" system, and MFL - I've grown more grey hairs in the last little while than I care to acknowledge.

Does anyone have any advice on the best way to leave CX? I'm not sure who I would even give my formal notice of resignation to - any input? Also, my big concern is the housing allowance. Any advice on the best way to go about breaking the lease? Is there any way to avoid paying back the loan that CX gives you for the deposit on your flat? Is there anything else I've failed to consider?

Actually I think it is a reasonable question. I guess the last thing you want to do is walk around the thurd floor asking who to hand it in to, and since there is no crew retention problem, one assumes there are no people quitting, thus no one on the third floor would know who to send you to. Size do you know? I have been here plenty of years, and I have to be honest, I am not sure who one would hand it to.

Fleet Manager (sorry he is in a meeting)
FRCM (sorry he is with Denly doing a star chamber)
Fleet Secretary (sorry I can't take it)
GMA (Sorry he is on "Crew Morale Groundschool")
GMO (Sorry he is off spreading the joy at KA)
Trudy (sorry we cant fedex stuff for you any more)
Crew Control (sorry you didnt help us out when we asked, we cant take it)

Correct! Hand it to your boss like sizematters says.:ok:

That only works if you change basing companies...IE must move to USAB from VETA in Hong Kong.;)

Actually, in most other airlines, I would think this was a wind up. But you must keep in mind that Cathay has a lot of guys that have never worked for other airlines, or have come here with zero flight time. So go easy on the guy, that might be the case and he is just trying to get some good advise :ok:

I've handed in a few resignations in my time, so I'll give you the best advise I can give. Make sure that your resignation letter smells like bull****t. What I mean is; THIS IS NOT THE TIME FOR YOU TO BURN BRIDGES!!! Seriously, don't kiss ass so much that who ever reads it will know it, but really make it professional and appreciative of the opportunity that Cathay has given you, and how you have made so many friends here in CX that you will miss them very much...yadi yadi yada.

Regardless of what people tell you, I've seen guys come back. Not just here in CX, but in other places I've also worked. And the only reason they were able to come back is that they had a clean record before they left, and I can guarantee you that they had a professional and stinky letter of resignation in their file. And the best way to do this is to inform your boss (Chief pilot) in person. You can then hand in the letter and make it official. And I always try to give a little more notice than the minimum, although sometimes you have to leave as asoon as possible. But I strongly advice you against busting the minimum 1 month notice that Cathay requires. That will definetely put you in the ****t-pile and you can consider this bridge blown to bits and unpassable.

If there is one thing I know for sure is that aviation is a small business, so you don't want to piss-off too many people. You're favorite person to piss-off in one place might be your I-have-the-power-to-fire-you boss at another place.

Best of luck on your new endevours. :ok:

Don't forget to order a FULL set of uniforms before you leave.....:}

Nothing wrong with stating your real reasons when you go IMHO, for your own benefit and everybody elses make a polite but clear statement. You are doing the profession a disfavour when you choose to make a silent run.

The chances that you will come across another “I have the power to fire you, ruin your life and family” character in your new airline are extremely remote. Careers of such leaders are geographically confined to where they find the unvocal majority.

Go to the fleet office. Hand over the notice to your chief pilot. Let him know whats in the envelope. Say thank you for a great time at Cathay but you have decided on leaving. No more - no less.

That way you are lying him and CX up their faces - just as they have been doing it to you for a long time. Nobody up on 3rd floor (or any other floor at CX City) cares about you or any other of their fellow pilots/employees. If they say they do - they are only lying once more.

Like somebody else said. Dont forget to take a basing first to get your pension transferred to your own account. A lot of guys have done that before you. At the end of the day - its your money, not Cathay's.

Wish you the best of luck on what I firmly believe is a sound and good decision.
