If you're joining CX you'd better get used to it - that's the 'Cathay way'...

latest statement from management is on shore starting april 2008, which C.D.
confirmed that last week. prepare for 35% tax PLUS NHS. this will be a major pay cut, the offered 3% raise is a joke compared to that.

You may just have - sorry to say!

Will all European based CX pilots be paying UK tax - even the CDG and FRA based crews? Does it matter what your base is, or where you actually live?

spannersatcx 20th Oct 2007 08:49

I'm a bit confused, are pilots exempt paying tax like the rest of us? Are UK based crews currently not paying tax or something, if so how?

Christopher Gibb 20th Oct 2007 09:53

spanners

as a line engineer for CX(?) surely you pay tax somwhere? Unless you work in the tax haven the Isle of Man.....or is it Dubai?

Confused

BusyB 20th Oct 2007 10:00

Spanners,
A number of UK based crews are onshore and pay UK and HKG tax. Some do not have a primary residence in the UK and spend on average < 90 days year in UK. Whether they pay tax in their country of residence (france, spain cyprus) depends on the tax rules there.:ok:

spannersatcx 20th Oct 2007 14:03

Yes I pay tax where I am, thanks Chris.

I didn't (don't) really understand the tax for the pilots. I got the impression that all of a sudden they were (are) being taxed in the UK, the assumption was 'well if that's where you live, then tax should be paid like others do', and it was seen as some sort of pay cut because they are now having to pay tax, whereas before they weren't.

So although based (by CX/choice) in the UK, they don't actually live there! It just sounded like having your cake and eating it. Still none the wiser.

BusyB 20th Oct 2007 14:28

At the moment even if based and paying UK tax you only pay voluntary Nat Ins. contributions as the CX company that employs us is not onshore. Thats why CX has got away with paying lower salaries than Virgin and BA but now when full Nat Ins is paid it is a substantial paycut.

spannersatcx 20th Oct 2007 17:50

OK thanks. The way it was reading was that all of a sudden you were having to pay tax whereas before you weren't.

Christopher Gibb 20th Oct 2007 23:41

spanners,

sorry should have quoted your post so you knew what i meant.

UK on shore

According to my sources those of us lucky/unlucky enough (you fill in the gap) to be living in the UK will indeed be exposed to PAYE and NI come april 6th 08. However UK tax law still applies and thus any of you chaps who live outside the UK (ie europe/us etc) and can convince or prove to the UK taxman that you are indeed non domiciled, non resident (meaning you do not and will not live in the UK) and file taxes elsewhere, will be exempt the PAYE or the major portion there of. There is a form you fill in and give to CX UK who then give it to HMIR who make a decision to withhold or no!.....NI contributions are likely to be due depending apoun your resdient nations agreement with the UK...Not much help I know for all you poms onshore and living in deepest darkest kent et al....suppose the only consolation is come your three years on the freighter and the move to honkers (hold your breath) your UK tax goes away unlike some poor sods whose worldwide income gets hit where ever they work (US for example). Hope this helps any euro types who were thinking of/offered a UK base.
cheers
