HK Shopping

Planning on coming over to HK for a visit and would appreciate any advice from those of you who live in HK as to where the best places are to shop for electronic goods.

Thanks

Johnnys Me Fo's in MungCock

HotDog 13th Jan 2004 10:16

No such place as MungCock in Hong Kong but there is a district called Mong Kok on Kowloon side. You can get there by the MTR. I find Fortress stores as good as any for cameras, electronics etc. and you won't get ripped off like in some tourist traps in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Both Fortress & Broadway (u can find both in Mong Kok) are ok. Most locals buy things there. However do go there during day time as the sales people have more time to serve you. After work hours you'll see the shops are flooded by people.

Prices aint what they used to be. I bought a Video Camera recently - Amazon (UK) beat any of the stores in HK. Shop around - at home as well!

Electronics are no cheaper but electronic accessories such as memory, batteries, filters, lens etc are.

I recently brought a Canon D300 digital camera Plus all the accessories from Echo Photo & Camera Store. It is just up from the fortress in TST (the one opp the HMV store) the road it is on runs parrell to Nathan road (sorry but i completely forgot what it is called)

I saved myself over a grand (AUD) buying it in HK and have brought 3 cameras from Echo in the last few years and have found them to be fantastic. THey are not like the ripoff muchants with the fancy neon signs that are located up and down TST.

Email or PM us if u want any more info.

Cheapest camera, (least expensive!), that I have bought in the last few years was a Cannon Eos from Brisbane duty free!

Echo Photo is in Hankow Road. Another good one is Bob Lai in Middle Road, behind the YMCA.

767Junkie 14th Jan 2004 19:27

That is the one Hot Dog. I havent had a problem with Echo Photo & Audio. They also seem to have HEAPS of business cards from tech crew from all ova the place.

I have also heard good things about Bob Lai.

I managed to save myself a lot of money with the current exchange rate (was about 5.7 HKD per 1AUD)

Have a great trip :D

Golden computer center Sham Shui Po for computer bits...

Wanchai computers for laptops.

Far Yeung street Prince edward for cloths, not the centre market but the shops behind, all the aussie labels.

Avoid TST electronic stores like the plague.

Copy watches seem to be better quality up in MongKok

For AV equipment i like Centry AV. its in Mong Kok, go out exit E2 about 3 entrances on the left you will see a cue for the an elevator join the cue and go to 10th floor. infact the hole building in a AV paradise. If you get to the body shop you have walked too far.

Can also recommend Bob Lai. Ask for Dexter. Not the absolute cheapest but you won't get ripped off.

Found a man with a stall on the Apilu St market in Sham Shui Po selling rubber dog sh!t. Now I really can say...........maybe not. Can't be bothered.

One of my local colleagues had this advice for me when I first came here (long term TDY in HKG): Never buy electronics in TST; never buy ANYTHING from a local with brown dyed or streaked hair!
