The Chinese goverment now know that Sinovac, whilst not as good as the western vaccines, did an acceptable job against the early COVID variants. However its efficacy against the Omicron version is very marginal and they know it's back to a Wuhan 2019 situation if it gets in. They either develop another vaccine and administer it within a few weeks or lose face by adopting a more effective western version instead.

No wonder the borders are staying shut.
This might very well be the reasoning and matches the strategy they have followed so far.

Problem is, Omicron seems so much more infectious, I doubt you can keep it out, this thing just spreads too quickly. May be this will finally make them change course. They could be just trying to hold it out a bit more until they have adapted Sinovac.

A quarantine-exempt Cathay Pacific cargo pilot has been confirmed as the first carrier of the coronavirus’ more transmissible Omicron variant to enter the Hong Kong community.

Health experts have in recent days suggested tightening quarantine measures for local cargo pilots, who are currently only required to self-isolate at home and allowed to leave for up to two hours a day for Covid-19 testing and other essential activities.

The 36-year-old Cathay pilot, who arrived from Anchorage in the United States on Monday, left home to buy food and undergo Covid-19 screenings before testing positive on his third day after arrival. The case triggered a lockdown and mandatory testing at his block of flats in Yau Ma Tei on Thursday.

The Transport and Housing Bureau on Friday said it was very concerned about the infection and had asked the airline to investigate and carry out follow-up measures.

Follow up measures? Maybe they should just keep all the crew in ULD containers in the ramp between flights. That should keep COVID out.

Thumbs down

So this translates to "Hold the Pilot's family, friends & colleagues hostage until he finally admits any wrong-doing even if totally innocent"

The three that were fired I believe came about when one of the guys were told if they admitted guilt the CHP would release the DBIS kids and all the crew who had stayed in Mainz those last 30 days.

Let's see how this is all handled now that it is a Local in the firing line.....hush hush

Why do BA and Virgin crews still accept to overnight in HKG. You can wait for this to happen. Why not route through BKK or even KUL like most other European airlines do?

The exemption is basically for all cargo flights. We have to home isolate for 3 days post pattern.

Why not do a crew change in BKK and avoid all risk? This Penny Bay situation is far from new. If management doesn’t want to spend a few extra bucks they can do these flights themselves.

Yep, they'll ring in 2022 in PB. Meanwhile, in other parts of the world where common sense prevails: US CDC reduces isolation period for COVID-19

The article cites some scientifically based evidence on when asymptomatic people are most contagious and also cites the reduced severity and duration of Omicron in vaccinated people. The isolation China (and HKG by association) faces is not without historical precedent. You can read about it here: China's Historical Isolation. Seems to be headed in that direction.

843 and 841, two crew members negative on arrival and found in the community. Expect further restrictions.

I have enjoyed the xmas messages of HUGE thanks for 2021, and HOPE for 2022. What is absolutely clear is that 2022 will be worse (for pilots) than 2021. I would guess that the next move by the CHP will be the cancellation of home EMS and the imposition of mandatory hotel or PB quarantine for ALL. The hotels are gonna fill up real quick so it is PB for you on your post flight G days followed by a single entry room key layover for your next flight. Please be guided accordingly.

Because cathay management is too incompetent to accomplish this.

It’s coming no matter what

Regardless of the quarantine bs covid WILL arrive en mass.
vaccination is not a perfect defense but dramatically reduces deaths from infection. Oz and Nz finding that out now and their isolationist theory allowed them time to vaccinate most without the horrible Usa or Europe death tolls.
This is here to stay like it or not..
learn to live with it and get a common global plan that reflects some common sense.
Big daddy sure has HK under control compared to the recent days of rioting unrest!
