Borders will remain closed till Nov 2022

The way the HK gov wants to follow what mainland is doing, guess we’re stuck till Nov 2022 with current quarantine restrictions till then.

By then the rest of the world would have moved on as there will be multiple treatments for COVID.

Can anyone honestly say they’re willing to ride out another 365 days (at least) under these draconian conditions?

This is just a speculation. Not a statement.
Top covid scientists in PRC and CCP have mentioned the gradual opening of borders at 85% vaccination rate. And about gradually living with virus in society. Aforementioned are stated in their State Controlled Media, not Financial Times. Why would the Chinese release such statements repeatedly about eventually opening borders in multiple sources? If by then the whole rest of the world has developed some sort of immunity and she is still closed up to the world, who will be the laughing stock in the end?

State control media writes what it’s told to write, it’ll never be at 85%, they will chase covid zero no matter what the vaccine rate is.

Even a (scientist or epidemiologist can’t remember) floated the idea of living with covid on a Chinese social media page and got declared a traitor! Clearly they’re not pursuing anything else than covid zero

Don't you think it will be shameful if they can never get 85% rate? Don't you think it's a loss of face? Of course they will get to the goal.

Yes zero covid is currently the strategy but I'm guessing they can't keep it up without having a damaged supply chain and slow import. So the narrative will be eventually to live with virus in future, with these China official scientist's statements as a prelude.

I believe perhaps there will still be some quarantine in place in near future , eventually reduced to 7 days or so towards mid year etc. Do they not lose face if they promised an opening of border at high vaccination rate but never able to attain this goal? Be a little more optimistic!

Regarding the covid zero opinion scientist, yes he was condemned but that was a long time ago. Now that the party has made official statements through their top virologists about eventually living with covid like the rest of the world, other Chinese scientists have stepped out saying similar things along the line without being banned or taken down.

They don’t care about losing face in this instance

This has been reported many months ago I've first read about it. This must be a re-report. Anyways, 6 more months into 2022, so what. Think about it, what good does it do to itself economically, socially, soft power wise, overseas Chinese's sentiments, global offices, what good does it do to itself by closing up for so long and wasting all resources doing province wide testing? Wild guess maybe buying time to vaccinate booster shots to majority of the population, or come up with its own DNA and mRna vaccines which is reportedly in the making. Many Chinese citizens online have been nagging about the recent lockdowns over new cases, citing something like, what's the point of the vaccines which have reached over 70% of the population if we still can't live with the virus and have to endure job losses and lockdowns. True story.

Scroll a little further down to read this hk professor's reasoning for China wanting to stay covid zero now, and of course it's risk and sacrifices in doing so. Long but good read!
