DPA Bows Out

The DPA is being wound up.
I would just like to post my heartfelt appreciation for the committee’s efforts during recent trying times.
Not to mention the many years of service to the membership.
Thanks and farewell.

The DPA became “ diluted” in the last few years. Too much complicity with management. More C scalers than B scalers, doing the right thing helping out . I preferred the DPA under the stewardship of King Harry “ Nil Further” day .
On that point, it bemuses me that Dragonair ceased ops, with no more than a feeble whimper from its pilot and cabin crew workforce. There was little backbone there, and the company took its chance and deal the fatal blow. I do hope that the piranhas of the mainland eat the scraps of the remaining hk aviation scene.
HK express, really ? Pathetic, and it’s embarrassing to those who remember what was, way back when.

Yes, buying HK Express was as big of a screw up as the fuel hedging debacle.

I disagree. It was a smart move to buy the competition, and me thinks that it might just be HKE that’s gonna pull CXi through this whole calamity.

Post china virus, mainline CXi will be much much smaller, with a handful of A50s doing long haul to some Chinese colonies such as Oz and Hongcouver.

Express off course cheap holiday destinations like Bali and ‘Nam (in fierce competition with Greater Bay Scarelines) and the old freighter flying, well, .

So Who is flying the new Cathay A320s ? Mixed fleet, or new skippers with command ready FOs needing handling sectors ?

Or not
However if it were true, that would be another bunch of pilots who managed to put themselves out of the next to sack list,
joining those who moved to the freighter, the one seconded to AHK, the one who volunteered for jail and most probably all the local pilots.

The DPA had a number of blips in it's time, where self-interest won the day or members pushed a committee in a direction they didn't eventually make a stand on.

Yet for the most part it was a considerable success. Perhaps even a remarkable success when compared to the other pilot groups in Hong Kong? At the DPA's best, with politics aside, there was a lot of unassuming talent that forged good programs and support for members. KA pilots drifted in, put something together with all their energy, and then left having made a contribution to the membership. Success should not always be measured in the many pay rises, but also more widely, from the guys who put together a superb leave scheme, to our impromptu get togethers to raise money for members afflicted by an appalling medical scheme ( members with businesses donated heavily ).

The DPA often lead the way for management, pushing back responsibly on training and safety issues. What should be an eternal disappointment for KA pilots is the vengeful nature of some in management who were members. It was not necessary and your egos meant nothing in the end. Also, the success of some managers and a cooperative DPA shouldn't be lost going forward either - outstanding LOSA reports and a rapidly improving training system with managers who were formerly active members.

The DPA will be sadly missed. And puts the HKAOA to shame.

Both the DPA and the AOA had some great contributions from numerous individuals who served both groups admirably. Their biggest problem was they were let down by disinterested members who gave nothing but expected everything.

Paying membership fees in the thousands every month to self serving GC members with ZERO negotiating skills or legal qualifications, isn’t exactly giving “nothing”.

And yes, I did wear red, never answered my phone and laughed at G day scum

Did it ever occur to you to run for the GC yourself ? you know, use your great negotiating skills for the benefit of your colleagues. Otherwise you did nothing. Wearing red? wtf, big deal.

That old chestnut.

the recommendation to ratify TA18 told you everything you needed to know about the GC’s interests.

DPA was run by an immature GC.
So let's not pretend it was anything more than a tool for certain few to benefit themselves. Was a clown show in the last few years.

You are clearly bitter about your misgivings with the DPA... probably weren’t a member or resigned at some point. What was it? A failed command or two ? Could be a number of reasons which will continue affecting you throughout your career. You’ll always be a bitter person no matter where you are.
Either way, the DPA benefitted the majority and achieved many good things for both the company and pilot group. The fact remains that close to 85% of the pilots stayed with them until the very end and were proud members. They offered the company an alternative to drive down costs which no other TU did. I myself was a member and I couldn’t be more proud of what they achieved. The DPA will always have my respect !

Wonder what happens to all the HKD millions these TUs must have stashed away in their “War Chest” bank account, now that the DPA has gone kaput.

Hopefully KA colleagues who contributed all those years will get a return on their “investment”
