Other Airlines Upping Their Game
1. Airlines in many parts of the world launching flights to nowhere. WE ARE A TINY CITY, we don't have domestic traffic like in Taiwan, Japan, US, Australia, NZ just to name a few. Why are we not launching flights to nowhere to generate more sales? Even the tiny city of Singapore like us is doing it, why are we not?
2. The Restaurant Idea. Singapore Airlines, all sold out within minutes, people paying up to 500-600USD each. Emirates reopening bars, Finnair launching meals, Thai airport opened an airline restaurant. At least some staff in the kitchen get to work, airlines still get some income. What are our ideas? Why are we not coming up with innovative plans and marketing strategies?

Singapore Air "Singapore Airlines is opening a new restaurant — on its A380, double-decker aircraft. As part of its “Discover Your Singapore Airlines" initiative, the airline will be launching a limited-time dining experience onboard a grounded plane at Changi Airport.
"Emirates "Passengers will now be able to drink and shower at 40,000 feet as luxury airline Emirates brings back some of its signature onboard amenities, including the famous onboard lounge, but with changes to make it safer amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The airline will reopen its onboard bar on its A380 for first class and business class passengers, the carrier said this week, but will make it a take-away experience with limited seating. The bar will serve spirits, wine, and soft drinks, as well as pre-packaged snacks passengers can bring back to their seats."
Finnair "Finnair just launched meals inspired by its business class offerings in partnership with one of the country’s largest supermarket chains. The airline describes the move as an effort to both keep its catering teams working and to satisfy the wanderlust of Finns stuck at home."
Thai "More than 100 diners craving in-flight meals after months of travel restrictions flocked to Thai Airways International Pcl’s offices to try a new pop-up restaurant and get a reminder of the forgotten flavors of on-board dining."
3. Misc Sales. Thai Airways To Sell Bags Made From Old Life Jackets. Title says it all. Something is better than nothing. I'm sure there are more from other airlines.
4. Borders. Is the govt even trying to launch talks and open up borders? Yes, we might have a SG-HK bubble soon but with the high costs in place, who is bringing a family of 4 along? What about other safe countries like NZ, AU, Taiwan? Take Singapore for instance, they have launched multiple green lanes, safe travel countries and allow people from these countries NOT undergo quarantine, including speeding up talks on allowing business travel with multiple destinations. We are a similar tiny city like Singapore, no domestic travel, and why are we not doing more to increase travel influx? Why can't we exercise common sense and allow travellers and launch more flights to safer countries, with reduced or no quarantine? Why do we have to stay put, and no progress been made since March? What have we achieved in the tourism sector? Any lads want to brainstorm why we have almost achieved nothing with little progression? Are we going to close up our whole city and watch it go down with our tourism?

we will get there eventually, unfortunately due to the speed at which this management operates, things take a little longer here in the Big Lychee.

When you are losing HK$2 BILLION a month do you really think any of these things will make a difference? It may make a few who are involved feel better but won't change the outcome.

That's why we should exercise common sense to open up borders and travel with safe countries, NZ, AU, Taiwan, SG, let negative tested tourists in, and vice versa. Business green lanes... something better than nothing. Seems like we have invested so much money on the new runways and projects but decided its best to close up our city. Once borders reopen slowly, flights start to get going. But WHAT ARE WE DOING NOW?

The problem is that management spent months building a plan to cut our contracts instead of doing the one thing that could save the airline, ie lobby the government to reopen the borders.
Very few cases in China, Oz, NZ, most of Asia. That would have been a good start.
But no, as always, cutting cost is the only thing they can think of.
Hell, they even managed to piss off the only group bringing money to the airline.
If I was a 747 pilot, I think a reduction of 40-60% in working days for 2021 should be about right.

Little fanfare but plenty of cheer as HK Express operates its first ‘flight to nowhere’ in skies over Hong Kong Carrier takes 112 passengers on quick trip over city but haze means most sights remain unseen Travellers just happy to be airborne once again as anticipation builds over opening of travel bubble with Singapore.
SINGAPORE - Demand has been overwhelming for behind-the-scenes tours of the Singapore Airlines (SIA) Training Centre after bookings opened on Sunday morning (Nov 1), the national carrier said. More than 6,800 bookings were received and registrations were closed after nine hours due to "overwhelming demand", SIA said on Sunday evening. Bookings opened at 10am on Sunday and closed at 7pm. Up to five people can be registered under one booking. Those who have secured a slot for the Inside Singapore Airlines tours will be able to tour the training facility in Upper Changi on one of four days over the last two weekends of November. There is a maximum capacity of 500 customers on each day.

Aviation, travel, tourism industries are absolutely finished in Hong Kong, they will all go broke with a government as inept as this.

The govt's choice of action is unbelievable. NZ, Vietnam, Taiwan are all examples of 100% safe countries and you are telling people from these places to pay another 14 day hotel to quarantine? Do we not have a tourism board in this city or travel department that can help lobby for the tourism jobs and sector? Singapore has since opened up to multiple countries and many without having to quarantine / or just quarantine 7 days at home, and the local transmission cases are zero-1. The recent HK cases are mainly spread by locals, Mui Wo staycation among friends, the middle age China prostitute, and 1 unknown source that infected a CWB worker. Could he be infected by a close family who went to the prostitute or friends of friends of the MuiWo clique? Why are we closing our damn borders now? Are you serious???

Agreed. With the hotel quarantine requirements the only possible way forward is the PRC routes.
Those routes have to be bid for and the whole tortuous ATLA process gone through. Then there's the slots in the PRC. CX management have tried several times to grab them and been told no.
As soon as the birder opens expect a flood of mainland airlines and no local licensed carrier.
Great way to boost cash flow.

It’s a matter of changing the game completely, not upping it. If anything downsizing it big time.
For the last decade traditional airlines have been serving long haul and business pax mainly, do you see these 2 types of customers coming back soon?
Airlines either change their structure completely, or it’ll be a long wait to see things as they were.

Singapore embraces coronavirus tests, infection ratios to speed up travel restart, today on SCMP Singapore is using a plan involving ratios and testing to open its borders to as many international visitors as possible based on their home country of risk, Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing said. The government looks at a country’s “observed prevalence rate” of coronavirus infections and is “mathematically, statistically” managing this to make sure that “we have a highest number of visitors, business travellers” possible without breaking the risk budget, Chan said.
