I am attempting to get my daughter home from Australia via HKG and would be most grateful if any Cathay pilots could get in touch as she is hoping to travel with you SYD-HKG before her visa runs out. I plan to fly her from HKG to LHR on 20 July. Please feel free to PM me if you think you can help?

Apologies if I wasn’t clear. I am a pilot with BA and my daughter is hoping to fly with Cathay to meet my flight in HKG and get back home. (I am operating the BA32 on 20 July, so it is a tight window).
Problem is, the Cathay flight CX100 is looking pretty busy and I was hoping to ask the operating crew to look out for her and maybe even consider her for a jumpseat if that is permissible?

True, except the sandwich eaters. I believe they can do this job beautifully. Just saying.

Obviously, after a freebie or upgrade or jumpseat ? FYI for your precious little thing to get from SYD to HKG CX are still selling seats at about $1000 (economy) on 20 July

Good to see the CX culture and hierarchy is still there. Can’t wait till the day a so called “sandwich eater” doesn’t speak up to you in the flight deck because you have missed something and you look like a complete ass. Like the others have said I don’t know why you can’t be somewhat helpful in a difficult time. Glad to be at a functional airline.

Folks,

Thanks to those who got in touch offering to help. I have tried to respond to you by pm, but the site keeps telling me my inbox is 100% full with one message and won’t let me respond! I have therefore decided not to pursue the matter any further. Not sure if it is me or the site, but it isn’t user friendly!

To those of you with less charitable responses, thanks also. It has been.... revealing.... and vaguely entertaining, if also not very user friendly!

Shows quite a spread in the CX100 on blocks times over the past week or so, so it's going to be tight connection for sure.
Hopefully it's on time/early on the day for your daughter to give a bit more time to transit.

Is she traveling staff standby?
What's your staff check-in process like in HK?
Will she need to go to your BA Staff check-in counter?
Can she even get from the CX100 arrival gate to the BA staff check-in counter through the normal channel (immigration-baggage-customs-arrival hall)?
What time is the BA check-in cut off?

Have you looked at what is the transit pax process in HK post COVID-19?

Will she have check-in or just carry-on baggage?
Can she go through one of the transfer points from the arrivals level to the departures level and go straight to the BA32 departures gate on a staff ticket?
Is she an experienced staff traveller?

Hope you have a win, I'm sure it would be a great thing to fly your daughter home, especially during these crazy times.

You may have to look into whether or not she can "enter" Hong Kong to check-in again for the next flight.
Unless they can check her in all the way to the UK with staff travel, I think you may have an issue.

1) Does she hold a HK ID card to be allowed into HK?
2) Doubt they will allow someone to enter HK and not do the mandatory quarantine before being allowed to check-in for the next flight
3) Will they allow her to board the flight from SYD if they cannot check her through to the UK

Passengers will be able to transit through Hong Kong if:

• Their itinerary is contained in a single booking.
• They meet the entry requirements of their final destination.
• They have their baggage checked through to the final destination.
• They have been issued their onward boarding pass(es) from their origin and.
• The connection time between flights is within 24 hours.

Unfortunately ST to HK is not possible if you aren’t a HK resident. Even as a resident you would have to enter HK to check in for the next sector and that means 14 days quarantine. Having read around it I think the only way she can travel on your flight is on a commercial ticket where she checks in in OZ and has boarding passes for the whole journey.
That is the sad truth in our new world. I wish I could help and repay some of the courtesy I have received from BA friends and colleagues over the years.

How utterly unnecessary. I have always found BA crew to be incredibly helpful, and they have often managed to find me a more comfortable seat.

It is embarrassing enough that we cant repay the favour, without being exacerbated by your shoddy attitude.

Don't mind the wan*ers here, their default setting is bitter. You should try working with them.
Not sure if this will apply to your daughter, but a friend of mine was trying to travel to Aus from Philippines via HK, and they would not let him on the flight as he was traveling on two separate carriers. I'm not exactly sure of the details, but he did not get on the flight.

I am not sure if Qantas is still operating non stop to London but that might be a better option , transiting through HK After covid has become problematic and probably best avoided if you can .
otherwise you may have to bite the bullet and buy full fare on emirates to London . Or possibly consider flying through LA or Vancouver and picking up a BA flight from one of those destinations to London . Best of luck to you
you could also request a visa extension due to problems with travel during covid 19 , I believe the authorities are fairly flexible

Notwithstanding everything everybody else has already said re transit, purely from the point of view of SYD-HKG loadings , I’d be surprised if there is any issue getting a seat. I came back on CX100 about a week ago and only about 40 pax on board- half transiting and half terminating HKG. Paid about AUD700 in Y.
Actually I’m seeing $1133 SYD-LHR right now on 19th on 100/251. No transit issues then.

Thanks everyone. Your info has been most useful and I have given up on the staff travel idea. I had bought full fare SYD - HKG, but have found a full fare SYD -LHR with BA that is only £50 more so am going with that.

Really appreciate all the good gen on this - you have helped my decision making hugely! Hope I can repay the favour someday (if I still have a job &#128580....
