Qantas to set up its own pilot training academy

Cathay Pacific has responded.

"We are surprised that our Oneworld partner is taking this unnecessary action. It is widely known that Qantas already has a pilot training facility, which is located at 8 Scenic Road, HKIA. Cathay Training Captains are second to none and if anyone has any doubts, they only need to ask a Cathay Training Captain to have the record set straight.

Cathay Pacific has proudly provided a large number of pilots to Qantas in recent months and could easily provide another 100 immediately. Our Management are shortly entering talks with the AOA and considering what concessions Management is seeking, 500 additional pilots per year is easily achievable.

Qantas simply doesn't need to take this action, we can train their new pilots better and cheaper than Qantas can."

When asked how much Cathay charges Qantas to train all these pilots, the Cathay spokeswoman said "cannot" and blamed the AOA and then rudely engaged in a loud conversation in Cantonese on her blinged up iPhone.

Epic, simply epic. And the funny thing is, it might as well be a legitimate press release from the company.

QF obviously don’t read PPRUNE. Otherwise they would know that they can hire every CX/KA pilot with a pulse, and that cadets that haven’t had 5,000 hours in GA/ military are The End Of The World As We Know It, and a massive safety risk

(Given the state of GA in OZ, this looks like a very sensible idea by QF. If kids no longer are attracted by the old career path of self funded flight school/ hours building/ GA/ hope for job with mainline, then cadets are the way to go)

All this talk of more action less talk, still sees the absence of action and the result is, well, more talk. Is it only me that finds this ironic?

No it isn’t. It’s talk about action. What action could they take? Produce another app?

Management Structure

It's also been rumoured that a CX employee, now in a "Senior Leadership" position, has been head hunted to manage this entity. It's reported he has much experience in this area as he is currently a Leader at the CX training Facility, has previously held very "high" leadership positions at CX and as well was a "TOP" leader in the Australian CASA. As QF has indicated, he's perfectly suited to oversee the development of the new entity and as soon as he is finished with his current "project" at CX can move directly onto the QF payroll. It's rumoured from other sources a large "signing bonus" "may" have been paid perhaps even in late 2017.
Also rumoured his past experience included assisting and supervising 49 other CX employees at finding work in other locations making him exceptionally well suited for his rumoured new position..

But wait... there's more... the DFO strikes back.

Speaking from her spectacular villa in Tuscany, the DFO confirmed that her villa was available for rent on the 6 weeks of the year she did not use the property.

When challenged with the suggestion that Cathay was becoming a training airline for Qantas, she robustly replied, “It is not just Qantas, but UPS, Fedex, Jet 2, AirNZ, any airline really.” She rejected the rumour that 30 pilots had already joined Qantas this year and said “Cathay pilots would not join Qantas as they are qualified on the A50, which Qantas does not operate”. She went on to say that, “once our brushwingers wear their new equallettes and fly out jets, which are far bigger and shinier than Qantas’s jets, they remain loyal to us. Besides, we have most of them financially bonded and they are on South African passports, they are going nowhere.”

At this point the GMF, himself a South African, said, “Look, I have no opinion on anything, I am just here to see how far I can climb the greasy management totem pole”.

Another Cathay manager, Mr Yosef Bin Had, said. "I spent many years in the Cathay Fuel Hedging Team and now that I am a pilot manager, I stake my reputation on fact that there is not a pilot shortage. Qantas are over-reacting. I understand markets and the time is right to cut pilots' salaries".

A HKAOA representative, who referred to himself as El Presiligo, agreed to speak on strict anonymity and said that he was still shocked that HPE did not deliver concessions to the Company. He rejected the thought of escalating Industrial Action as he felt all issues could be resolved by interpretive dance. He went on to say, “Management are very vulnerable to a dance-off as they recently lost one of their best dancers, particularly in the shirtless category. The pilots are not confrontational, they just want to make concessions to get rid of the Training Ban, so I can return to Training and perhaps pick up a job in the Fleet Office and be with all my friends, who let me call them by their first names."

Qantas reported an interim record profit today and their shares are trading near peak whilst Cathay shares languish near their base.

Confirmation

Regarding the above, Mr Yosef Bin Had's previous protege, Assistant to the Leader in Fuel Hedging Mr. Hon Loo Sing Streek (recruited from Beijing
‘s SingKing prefecture) agreed with Bin Had's comments. He has since accepted another internal position as Leader Brand Disenfranchisement.

Plenty of CX second officers went to QF in the late 1990s. Expect plenty of resignations at the more junior end as they are less established in HKG and are young enough for a 15 year climb up the seniority list.

Alliance in Brisbane are looking for F100 pilots if anyone wants a “beer money” job.

Question - When were the jets ever “shiny”?

Even the new airplanes quickly look old at CX due to the filthy air in HK, lack of exterior washes, and shoddy maintenance which rapidly has them looking haggard with wrong color parts and/or missing pieces due to deferral.

Can’t wait for summer, bet CX has the whole APU fleet all ginned up with spares so we don’t have to sit in sweltering heat waiting for Chinese ATC to figure out that putting the entire nation’s flights on the same five airways makes things unnecessarily congested. The PLAAF needs the rest, you see... Otherwise, the Yanks might kick their arses. Oh wait, that’s a certainty anyways and the US doesn’t even have to shutter 90% of the nation’s airspace to train.
