Now Dragonair Direct entry FO.

First it was CX and now KA.. are advertising for Direct entry FO. its has been a long while since KA advertised... maybe desperate times...

Package looks slightly better than CX

"attractive remuneration package, including 42 days annual leave, medical insurance, free and discounted travel for employee and eligible dependants, special allowance, children’s education assistance, and Chinese New Year bonus."

Not surprising. Most of KA recruitment was DEFO. Airlines need pilots to fly planes so I can't quite understand why you seem so shocked

Do KA get "free" travel?

Because CXs FOCs are NOT free there is now a nominal charge.

False advertising CX

Is anyone able to give some info on the KA package and lifestyle? Would this position be straight onto the HK$77,121 mentioned on PPJN?
How much would a year 1 FO take home each month?
Housing? Education? Staff Travel?

Finally, if anyone can give some info on the rosters, and time to upgrade, and general atmosphere in the company and on the flight deck.

Currently flying for the "worlds favourite airline" and am getting a little disillusioned with the 15+ years to the left hand seat, whilst taking home HK$45k.

It's more than that. Circa $95k.

No housing, yes education, yes staff travel but despite better priority the service is still woeful!

Rosters: short haul, 20-30 sectors per month, not commutable. Away 4-8 nights per month.

Upgrade time is very fast for experienced people but the course is very DIY so don't expect to be spoon fed.

If you have a visa for team green, you won't get a job with team red and vice versa.. No poaching rule.

Maybe you should be concerned that people already in HK (CX & KA) on these "local" packages are trying to get the hell out of here and go to the "worlds favourite airline", because they've worked out that despite having to wait 15+ yrs to get to the left seat, the long term career earnings are better.

Don't be lured by the fact the $ are double. The cost of living in HK is more than double, unless you're living in inner London, in which case the cost of living in HK is probably about 50% higher.

You'd be barking mad to swap anything half decent for this deteriorating circus.

Sorry Tricia. I understand you desire for a 'career', but coming here will probably prove to be a terrible mistake. As for the term 'useful idiot', no personal offence meant. It's a term from the cold war days, perhaps google it. Seriously, this is a miserable part of the world to be an airline pilot now. There is no joy in any company in HK anymore. Take it from someone who has been here a very long time. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thank you for the explanation Trafalgar. To be honest I wasn't aware of the term 'useful idiot', so I've learnt something new! So thank you for that, and thanks for the more in depth reply. Its really appreciated!

The job itself is ok Tricia. It's just a real pity about the package on offer and the cost of living in Hong Kong. Do not underestimate how much it costs to live here if you want some semblance of lifestyle. If your are looking at any more than short term and have, or are considering, a family, then you need to be eyes wide open on this one.

The education articles just above were an eye opener - even for me receiving education allowance.

I have a friend who started at DragonAir round about 2000; really sweet gig then - they paid the mortgage on his 2 bed flat, big money (he got in before they started a B scale pay rate), etc., but I'm assuming it's not as lucrative now...?

I might consider applying at cathay dragon , but by reading the previous posts about cost of living in HK it might put me off.
What about the time to command at KA ? is KA a truly a so called checking /chopping airline where nip picking is the norm among trainers?,
where command failure rates are super high?
right now I am in a position that I can apply for DEC A320 job (8500 hrs TT heavy turbo),nomally pay not that great but the LHS experience might open doors elsewhere . but I always fancied living in HK because of the great lifestyle and experience.
Would it be worth it to apply at KA which gives me the chance to operate the A330 or try for a DEC on a jet elsewhere for less pay?

Some said the recent failure rate hit 100%, so it must be lower. Even CX kept it to a mere 50%
Between the last two passes, the failure rate was 100%. On the day of the last pass, the failure rate was 0%. You can play with statistics all you like but the fact remains that in 2016, year to date, there have been three passes. 3.

Almost every month, 4 slots have been advertised and usually only 2 candidates are started due lack of eligibility or applications. One part of the pilot pool operate enmass, withdrawing their applications if one of their own fail which messes with the numbers.

If you're after a number that excludes the pre-command phase, I'd suggest the current failure rate is around 84%. If those in the later stages of the course get a guernsey, it'll drop to the enviable level of around 76%.

Three passes. How many fails during the same time period? Mostly in the sim or on the line? Valid reasons?

3/(1-0.84) = 19 candidates

3 passes, 16 fails

What you're not understanding is the pay is ok and they hype the job BUT it is only a reflection of desperate times and extreme crew shortage. Once you are hooked you can expect constant attack on pay and conditions.. Just take a look at the history ..Do yourself a favour and Google staff relations here. If you don't comply they'll pick 49 guys at random wherever they may be in the world and summarily fire them!! Be warned!
