For the marketing/ social media team that thought this was a good idea... We are supposed to be instilling confidence in potential customers not scaring the sh@t out of them!
They want to imagine that the two blokes up the front are crusty old veterans who might be able to save their arse if required not the kid on the MTR who misses their stop because they are going for a high score on Candy Crush.

Babysitting the autopilot

Babysitting the autopilot. Pigeon engwish. Just like the local pilot PA. A cringeworthy experience for all.

The irony is the KA pilot does get subtitles

I'm glad I watched this video. I now know how to get over my fatigue. I will join the CX fencing team first thing Monday morning. All is good in the world again.

from the comments below the video,

If you want to feel depressed, look at the comments about this clip on pprune, from the usual bunch of racist expats living in their dreamworld, where CX's sole objective should be to let them become millionaires. I respect the young people on this clip. As for the dinosaurs on the other site, I wouldn't spit on them if they were on fire.

+Steve Harper - the Fragrant Harbour forum on pprune is a disgrace. The "tired, worn out" pilots are a bunch of immature, twisted old bores with an over-inflated sense of their own importance, who provide further proof - not that any is needed - that the skills required to safely handle a plane do not equip you to be intelligent when you step out of the conckpit. A pathetic bunch of losers, all of them.

They do... Just not on this video!

It is truly humbling to read the comments of so many people who, doubtless, speak accentless Cantonese.

Basil, Cantonese is not a language, it is a regional dialect of the Chinese language. There are native Chinese speakers who cannot speak or write the dialect. The majority of young Cantonese speakers would not be able to write traditional Cantonese, they use a mix of simplified Chinese with a local variation. If you read the papers last week you would have seen how people are protesting how the lectures in HKG are not published in the uniform simplified Chinese text.

Cantonese has lost its regional identity, it has been taken over by the big brother up north so they can control it.

The reason I travel with Cathay is because of the expat pilots.
It is not being racist to make the observation that Asian cultural differences have been the root cause of many aviation accidents, and whilst there has been some improvement in this area over recent times, you just can't change centuries of cultural influence overnight.
I won't fly with any of the Chinese carriers because I am still not confident that an F.O. would speak up when his/her Captain is about to fly them into a hill, because it is not culturally acceptable.
It is not being racist to acknowledge that people from different countries are actually different.

Hi AvFool, I don't think he is resentful at all. He is only expressing what many of us, but also my non Cx friends also feel. Many of them have to fly around the region for work, and a lot of the flights are into China. These friends will almost exclusively fly only KA/CX, not for convenience, but for safety reasons.

The historic image of CX being a safe airline where pax are flown by experienced expats is still there in many folks minds.
Unfortunately, we know that the reality is sadly changing, and we all know it's for the worse.
God forbid, but a dingle feels like it's not far away as various holes in the Swiss cheese start to line up.

However, overtly displaying that the aircraft is now crewed by the spikey-haired, gel-wearing playstation generation, who have no previous experience, be it GA or Military, to fall back on, coupled with the "Frust Leeva" aspects, will not give passengers that reassuring and comforting feeling they were hoping for with CX.

From a passenger point of view, these videos are an own goal and a fail of epic proportions, if they are trying to portray CX as an experienced safe airline.
If they were designed as a canto recruitment ad to try and fill the seats that expats are no longer willing to do, courtesy of the continually reducing T & C's, then it may appeal to the 7-11 worker who wants to move up one notch to Airline Captain.

Good thing none of US did anything stupid while we were young.

Or at least tried to let as little people know about it when we did.

Then again, the internet didn't really much exist then.

Many of the kids are keen, and may gain experience over time, unfortunately what they WON'T get is real exposure to real flying when the machine is performed to its limits--or sometimes unintentionally beyond it. Or maybe know when to push instead of pull.

Or had the opportunity to scare themselves in storms, ice, tough to get into strips (in bad weather if you like), or marginal performance landing, taking off, or climbing out. And learn a good lesson from it.

Or getting a well deserved bollocking from someone they respect and trust over stuffing up something important rather than something trivial. And knowing the difference.

Or learn there can be great value in simply firewalling the throttles and hanging on to the SOB for all you're worth.

They will operate in a very narrow window of flight, never really be outside of it in a real airplane, push buttons, and manage systems. Maybe they'll even have an app on the iPhone and can sit in the back to eat. Guess that's OK when everything goes as planned which we all know is always the case in modern day flying.

While it's good to promote youthful exuberance, my bet is the folks in the back like to see a bit of fit, seasoned grey sitting in the front. Or at least ads pretending that there is. Don't think most cruise lines would advertise Wally, Lumpy, and the Beav as their trusted skippers.

When I watched parts of that video the word "grooming" sprung to mind..... and I wasn't thinking about the amount of hair gel slopped on the Captain's head!!

I fink the point is, my son, that the travelling public would rather have ol Del Boy up front wiv that plonker Rodney than a kid who sounds like Russsel Peters doing a Chinese impression.
