Its hard to get a pay rise when people work for less in the left hand seat than those in the right hand seat.

I wonder if it it is widely known in the industry that a significant number of captains have taken commands on 747 for less money and conditions than FOs.
Sodapop is right, turnandburn: for those already on bases, volunteering for a freighter command was a substantial raise with respect to F/O payscale, plus you were getting a command directly on your base: practically a no-brainer if for whatever reason you weren't interested in coming to HKG and collect housing. If you were in HKG and were happy to stay, different story.

That was IMHO what was so great about CX until a few years ago, the great career choices available: want to make loads of money? Hey, join as an S/O (or do your three years of "penance" as a based freighter F/O then come to HKG), then start collecting houses and boats. Oh, you're more of a lifestyle junkie? No problem, join as a DEFO on a base, do your three years of freight and then never see another freighter again (ah, the days of FACA), work twelve days a month max and sleep for half the flight. Prefer a widebody command in your basing area? Well, the rosters won't be wonderful and the pass rate on the Classic isn't great, but if you can stomach that, could you start, er let's see, yesterday?

As we all know most of these are choices have been pruned away (as have many other of the reasons to be here, temp bases, base swaps etc etc), but getting upset at colleagues who legitimately chose a different career path to the one you chose doesn't help.

FCNs make 15% more than an FO with the same time in service on the unified pay scale.
Captains at Delta and Southwest make about 45% more than an FO with the same time in service.

Sorry Sodapop, but if you are saying that CX pax captains make more than those at the US legacies, you are indeed wrong. We are now FAR behind with the new contracts at Delta, United, and American.

Box, I think he's saying (the obvious) that pax captains make more than freighter captains.

Seat warming indeed gives you more money at entry level but in long term, your upgrade and hours are just small peanuts compared to your fellow counterparts in other major airlines overseas.

The comparison should not be with FO pay but CPT pay as a FRT CPT is doing the same job for less.

Not doing more work, not more difficult and quite often better rosters. I fly both regularly and apart from the pay think you are talking rubbish.

Boxman,

Sorry, I didn't allude to the fact that they make more $$$ than the US majors, only that they make more of a % when compared to FO pay for same time in service.

The Euro pax scales do come pretty close to US pay when you convert. Of course, the buying power then differs depending on where you are taxed etc.

Yo Nit,

We did it to make more $$$ buddy.

Everything is economics my friend. There is no jumping of seniority, view my statement regarding FedEx, when everyone in the company has the chance to bid for the same position.

Ex-ASL excluded, of course. However, even when they or the ex-Oasis were added to the seniority list, all had another chance to go for the frtr.

I am embarrassed.
If the travelling public knew of the lack of maturity that inhabited forward of the flight deck door they would catch the bloody train.
Please, try growing up.

Curtain -Rod,

Get up-to-date. If you are as behind at everything else as you are at researching the B744 rosters I would hate to have you on my F/D.
Hardly any ULH flights. Top 5 get those almost every time, Lots of Reserve 'cos we're rated for both Freight and Pax. Lots of split duties and local flights. A 7 day Freighter pattern with a block of 5 G's afterwards is a jolly
