It is what your salary is for!
Do "local" pilots in other bases get a housing allowance? Do "professional" pilots in other airlines in their home countries receive housing allowances? I am sure there are many other local "professionals" in their 20's and 30's that live with their parents, pilots are NOT a special case!
and this seems to be a common excuse given by the company to justify why a decent housing allowance is not paid to the locals.

Iceman. Enough with the spurious and distorted logic. The main reason that expat pilots in HK NEED a housing allowance is that they need to maintain some sort of residence in their home countries. In other words, they must maintain TWO homes. Every pilot in CX since the day dot has done so. Expat pilots do not retire in HK. They have to go back to their home countries and settle into retirement. To do so they need to have maintained a home there. If you are going to hire expats, then you must account for this important life planning fact. To ignore it is a despicable dereliction of duty towards the needs of your employees.

There are many pilots in CX that have not had or do not have a second home in their home country. In my opinion housing allowance in HK is required so that the expat can hope to live something close to the standard they could expect in their home country.

Most CX pilots keep some sort of connection with their home country, a house of apartment in most cases. To argue otherwise is asinine. The point water check was making is that as expats we have a much different set of concerns than a local. To treat us as locals will not work in the long run. The same concerns that have always been a priority to expats will assert themselves, whether or not CX tries to pretend otherwise. So buddy...WTF to you....

Fair enough Iceman. I may have taken your comments out of context. I am still not 100% sure of what you mean. I am guessing you are suggesting 'locals' shouldn't receive housing, but expats should? Could you clarify whether or not you agree that expat pilots should get housing allowance? (sorry....long integrated pattern.....no sleep...)
