The main thing to consider is that none of you will be able to deny knowledge of Christ and his sacrifice, come the day you will be confronted with 'your' choice accordingly
God has been giving mankind the benefit of his Love and patience for two thousand years. I suggest that that period of history is rapidly coming to a close.
How do you think religion has survived.....instill fear amongst the weak and uneducated and you will have their attention and cooperation.

Water Check,

How can you base the fact of whether god exists upon what his followers wrote in their book. Of course the bible is going to say how wonderful your god is, it's a sales pitch after all. It will say Christianity is the oldest, the best, heals more, you name it and your religion will apparently always be best.

It's trying to extract money out of people, 10% 20% 30% of their income in most cases, so it needs to get it's message across.

Can we talk about how god created T-Rex and man on the same day and T-Rex had sharp teeth so it could eat coconuts because it wasn't actually a carnivore.

And then the devil created carbon dating and christians have been trying to destroy every carbon dating machine ever since.

These christians who know the bible backwards, can quote any part of it, and have 5 wives with the youngest aged 14, they know the bible better than anyone on here. Does that make them the best christians?

You're asking how 'Christians can base their belief on something that's written in a book'. Simple answer: they don't 'base' their belief on what's written in a book. Their belief is based on the workings of two things: 1) the Holy Spirit, and 2) Faith. It is those two things that give us certainty and a peace. I began my life as an atheist, but eventually became curious about the way the world worked and why we did things the way we did. Jesus says, 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me'. Once you sincerely seek God, his Holy Spirit which inhabits this world today enters you and reveals the nature and reality of God to you.

Simply put, the living God is there for every man and woman, but you have to be open hearted in seeking him. Once you do that, he creates lifelong assurance and certainty of his presence, power and eternal love for you. If you are not willing to ask God to reveal himself, openly and with humility, then no amount of 'searching' for another answer in life will succeed. Instead, you will go through life being blind to the very power that created and loved you. I cannot think of a sadder reality than that.

The Bible is God's word revealed to man. His spirit and my faith are the power that reveal himself to me. If you do not possess either, it is as though you are blind and will not see. That is the key difference between belief and being lost.

AP, typical unfounded gobbledeegook, holy spirit - yeah right! Where? Mystical experiences of spirit are not just limited to your Brand of belief - try to acknowledge that many other believers have similar entities, manifestations of efral things and thru this TRY to grapple with the idea you might have the wrong one. Better still read about psychology of the human mind and gain an understanding of your supposed spirit experience. It is Beyond belief.

Faith? We flogged this out before. It's an oxymoron, belief is accepting something WITHOUT evidence.

Again you dive straight into your book of books to support your claim, which is totally unrelated AND issue another threat IF we don't believe! Don't you get it! Its a Total disconnect from all reason. Childishly, you are saying,"my god is better than your god, nah nah nah nah ( poke tongue here)."

Why don't you accept the Shahada of Islam, " to know and believe without suspicion," equally valid claim that this is also the word of god. The revealed book. Sorry, is that a plank in your eye there?

At least that got it half right in saying " lā ʾilāha..." ==> " there is no god..."

Talk about pollution. Go and refresh your mind, your API (Against Poor Infedels) is registering +200. Your bigotry is showing.

Air Profit, seriously, have you sought medical help? Tremendous progress has been made through science to help those with mental problems, and the stigma of mental illness is rapidly going away.

Below are rhetorical questions, not items for debate!

Holy Spirit? Seriously, you believe in invisible ghosts of god in your imaginary supernatural world and expect others to respect your thoughts and opinions?

Faith? You know that faith just means believing something without any evidence while ignoring all the actual evidence that contradicts the thing you want to keep believing, right? You know all religious faiths are equally flawed, since you dismiss all the 1000's of other ones you don't like for the same reasons I reject yours, right?

If Christians don't base their believe in a book, then why do they keep reading it, teaching it, quoting it and filling hotel rooms with it?

If you are curious about how the world works, take a science-based class like engineering, biology, astronomy, geology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, anything...but don't rely on story-book created ghosts and personal choices to believe supernatural superstitions without evidence, please...Are we trying to move back into the Dark Ages?

Again, just cause some story book says "Jesus" or anyone said anything, this is meaningless and silly to include in any argument. Repeat: If I claim Santa Claus is real because it's in the story book, does that make him real? Etc.! Come on, man, think! Think!

God's love? Power? Etc.? Tell that to his innocent (they didn't eat the apple!) and faithful, loyal, open, humble, belief-filled followers who are being raped right now. And beaten. And who are sick and in pain. And starving in India/Peru/Ethiopia/etc....His "love" and "power" sure aren't impressive to any of us paying attention to the results of this great love and power. Now that's a sad reality. However, it is science that keeps technology progressing, curing diseases and prolonging better lives, not faith.

The Bible is a story book. Get over it! And it's a really, really bad one at that, with Bronze Age nonsense, never ending errors and countless contradictions. That's some awesome word of god those guys penned for him!

Those of us that live in the real world are not lost (see list of logical fallacies) but rather we are the ones that are not afraid to enjoy and learn about and experience reality, and live much richer, fuller, better lives for it, free from the ancient superstitions written down by poorly educated, uninformed, Bronze Age people! Does anyone want a doctor performing surgery using a book from the 1980's? How about the 1900's? The 1800's? The 1700's? How about the 1100's? Or the 600's? Or the 200's? How about the 100's? Come on, man, think! Think!!!

Have a nice day!

Devil A dying breed

Air Prophet is an interesting and rare "type specimen" of an endangered species: a first-world educated, religious delusionary.

He and his ilk are, as evidenced by this thread, in the throes of a generational "last gasp" of proselytizing their nonsensical, and let's be frank, just plain stupid ideas. Their worldview wears a burqa so narrow in it's field of view as to deny broad swathes of REALITY, such as evolution and fundamental aspects of geomorphology and cosmology.

Unfortunately for religion's "misguided missiles", they weren't able to shake the virus of faith due to their relative youth and inability to reject irrationality after they passed their "indoctrination V1". For now, they stand to lose too much by publicly acknowledging the foolishness of their fairy tales: Loss of face, potential alienation from their religious social circle (the most interesting thing about Christians is how un-Christian they can be!) and the embarrassment that comes with admitting what waste of time your rantings and ravings were.

What's even more sobering is they will get front row seats in the saddest show on earth: watching their highly educated, unbiased and worldly kids drift away from their myths and fables. It's one thing to have your bigoted and anachronistic faith lampooned and ridiculed by anonymous Internet patrons - but it would be another (quite terrible) thing to see those you love the most reject the embarrassing superstitions that form the basis of your core beliefs.

Secularism, rationality and plain ole logic are (thankfully) on the rise in every civilized society. Scandanavia, probably the most secular group of countries in the world, is a beacon of peace and relative prosperity (discounting the odd right wing Christian nut job in Norway of course). Australia and New Zealand, once traditionally thought of as "Christian nations" (whatever that means!) are now comprised in the majority of secularists. In fact, religious nutters are sure to get quite a shock when the latest Oz census details are released next year revealing just how non-religious the nation is.

The reason for this is simple: we're smarter than our ancestors. Today's average 5 year old know more about their world than smartest "biblical scholar". Here's an example of dark ages logic (bear in mind this kind of reasoning took place a thousand years AFTER your magic book was written!):

?rel=0" frameborder="0" gesture="media" allow="encrypted-media" allowfullscreen>

The reason you laugh at this nonsense is the same reason rational people laugh at your dogma. Thankfully, nowadays there is no "sacred cow" protection afforded to the dangerous religious virus that infects people's minds - and normal people don't quietly standby during it's promotion nor pretend to tolerate it's vile stupidity.

Let's finish with a fairy quote I think we can all appreciate here in Hong Kong:

"And if the one with the discharge spits on someone who is clean, then he shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening."

Leviticus 15

RAMEN!

Superfrozo, I see you are using the common atheist ploy of taking Old Testament verses out of context in an attempt to discredit the bible. Unfortunately your straw man arguments don’t really hold water when we look at these verses in context, so for those who actually have open minds please consider the following.

Psalm 137: 9 - The context is that the Israelites have just returned from captivity in Babylon and the psalmist is looking back in time and remembering the savagery of the Babylonian conquest. What he is saying is that it would be justice served if the same thing that the Babylonians did to them were done in return. The word translated ‘happy’ is not really a very good one, in the original language and context it really means ‘just’ as in justice. The psalmist never says he wants it to be so only that it will be so because it’s God’s justice.

Deuteronomy 23:1 - Again the context is telling. What this verse is saying is that people who have these afflictions cannot worship with Israel as they have come from other pagan/cult religions of the time, these things being a mark of these religions. The author in no way condones or supports it.

Ezekiel 23:19-20 - This one is very symbolic, as is much of Ezekiel. The author is using sexual imagery to convey God’s feelings of hurt and betrayal at Israel’s adopting of pagan religions. Again if you read it in the right context it makes perfect sense.

The bible often discusses or records immoral actions of sinful men but this does not mean it condones those actions. In all fairness the bible does also record God’s judgement from time to time and this may seem harsh by our modern standards but when viewed in the context of ancient morally corrupt societies and God’s high standards for Israel the atheist’s claims quickly evaporate. Ultimately I find it very hypocritical of atheists to claim the OT is immoral based their own version of morality when without God there can be no objective basis for this morality in the first place!

Ladies and Gents
After the last couple of posts by Superfrozo and Iron Skillet I think it's pretty clear who the religious zealots are. No amount of rational debate, at least Skillet is honest enough to admit he's not interested in any, will sway those who have already denied God's existence.

Thanks Air Profit and Water Check for your well reasoned and accurate posts but as I am largely to blame for the original thread drift may I humbly suggest it may be time to move on. As a Christian I am well aware this is a spiritual battle and no amount of rational argument will sway someone who has already made up their mind, that we have to leave to Him.

God bless.

Giga, your buffoonery is outstanding. Your arguments are pathetic and weak and continually centre on your hopelessly inadequate understanding of the bible and it's origins. You are doing exactly what you are accusing SF of, taking it out of context in your quotes. You have not considered the anthropologic, archaeological, or linguist origins of your document, nor have you applied any cultural understanding to the origins of the events, that allegedly occurred in those times. It is blatantly obvious in using ONLY the bible (again) as your sole reference; this demonstrates your ignorance and bigotry and most of all contempt for your fellowman and the wealth of research available, even for the half witted amongst us.

Harken back to Iron Skillets musings on the subject, it might be a good start for your meagre education in biblical history 101 - not to confused with your biblical bigotry 101!

There are giants in our past like Copernicus, Galileo, Giordano Bruno,Darwin, and many others that brought humanity out of the darkness and ignorance of your evil haunted world. Perhaps also you might like to read about Carl Sagon's little book, the Demon Haunted World. You are part of this ignorance and I'll be damned (happy now?) that I will let people like you try and become the dictators of my morals and impinge it upon any of my family, friends or politics - by saying and purporting to have the ONLY high and moral ground in this world, based on one corrupted document.

Get this! You Don't! There are far nicer, moralistic people out there of other faiths and no faith at all.

Peace.

sad but typical. The Christians use calm reason, with detailed explanations as to why they believe what they do. Their adversaries display unbounded anger and defamation. It is quite instructive as to the difference between the hearts of those who are with Christ and those who are against. I agree Gig, God's will be done.

Therein lies the whole essence of the matter. Any one who is of another faith (or no faith at all) is against yours and therefore must burn in hell. Nothing wrong with you believing in what you do, but plenty wrong in trying, through what amounts to your own fear and weakness, to get everyone else on the planet to also believe in your god. On the basis that harm will come to them if they don't.

Can you find me another religion that takes the same approach?

I can see from your posts how the Jim Jones/David Koresh sects get their followers so easily. You are so totally engrossed in your religion, or the version you have been told, or accepted, that you would happily believe whatever you were told if it could be reasoned from your bible book. Much as their followers were.

Nothing you say alters the fact that there are a lot of religions that suit a lot of people far better than christianity ever will.

I fly with Buddists who don't ram buddism down my throat, Islamists who don't ram Islam down my throat, Hindu's who don't ram Hinduism down my throat but f*ck me, can you find a christian who doesn't behave like it's the tupperware party of the religious world. Talk about hard sell. And then there's the photo's
"look at this photo of my daughter with the sun in the trees behind her, can you see the face of Jesus in there?"
"Well, nope"
"That's because you haven't found the lord yet, every photo I take has the lords face in it somewhere..........................."

As I said, if you need your bible book to tell you smacking your wife around is wrong, then don't give up on your bible book.

Surely if God can create and do everything he wants, he could create a stone so heavy, he couldn't lift it himself?

Did he create the chicken or the egg first?

Air Profit, I'm not debating...simply listing some things pointing you in the right direction to start educating yourself as to why I think you need further education, with some resources that should be helpful to end your delusion.

Merriam Webster Online:

REASON:The power of comprehending, inferring, or thinking especially in orderly rational way.
(Quoting/relying upon a nonsensical Bronze Age story book of superstitions copied from earlier cults, or the silly magical characters created within it, is not thinking in an orderly rational way, nor is believing you are right without any evidence while ignoring all the evidence that you are wrong.)

10 WHO ARE OR WERE WITH CHRIST:
  1. Sun Myung Moon, reincarnated Jesus of the Moonies.
  2. David Koresh, of Branch Davidian fame at Waco.
  3. Pat Robertson, of failed predictions and "Haiti deserved it" fame.
  4. Matthew Hale, serving 40 yrs in jail for attempted murder of a judge
  5. Micheal Bray, jailed for conspiracy to bomb abortion clinics
  6. Paul Jennings Hill, executed for murders at an abortion clinic
  7. Marshall Herff Applewhite, Jr., reincarnated Jesus/suicide pact leader
  8. Jim Jones, leader of murder/suicide of 909 people at Jonestown
  9. Charles Coughlin, vocal Hitler/Mussolini lover and Jew hatred promoter
  10. Fred Phelps, Sr., of "Thank God for Dead American Soldiers" fame
Above from:
Ten People Who Give Christianity a Bad Name

Yet more about "those with Christ" at:
1000 Years of Christian Barbarity

More truth about the "good book" at:
Evil Bible

Prove it to yourself, 50 different ways:
God is Imaginary

At least ask yourself:
Why Won't God Heal Amputees?

Think, man, think!

Have a nice day.

I suggest that if you are happy with your 'belief', and you can live with a clear conscience, then please feel free to continue thus. I am not interested in 'convincing' you in regards to anything. I will continue to defend and explain Christianity whenever it's attacked. I am not interested in changing your mind. I know from experience that once someone hardens their heart towards God to the degree that you have, that person is generally incapable of hearing God's quiet but insistent voice.

What concerns me more is that there are others reading who have more of an open mind and an honest curiosity about God and his message to mankind. To read your vitriolic, vulgar and rather hate filled comments, without a proper and more thoughtful rebuttal would deny other readers the opportunity to understand that God does in fact exist and truly loves each and every one of us on an individual level. Your message (and those of others like you) offer nothing but emptiness. That is not what God wishes for the creatures he created and loves.

It is quite sad that you think that your comments have any effect on me or others who also Love and believe in the Lord. To be attacked by those who oppose God's love and salvation is to only give me a small glimpse of what Christ endured, and for that any Christian can only feel humbled and grateful. Your attacks truly have the opposite effect to what you intend. I care that the hearts and souls' of others who are yet to make their choice can do so without feeling that people like yourself are all that this world consists of . You will eventually be taking full responsibility for your heart, and the words you speak.
