It's not that bad.
My thanks to all who contributed to the question. I can't claim to be better informed about why the pollution acts as it does but I have learnt one thing from this discussion and that is that Hongkong is not the worst polluted place in the world. Flying in and out of Chek Lap Kok recently should prove that to the doubters.

Who said anything bad about Hong Kong people? Get to know them and you will find they are good but powerless when it comes to this air pollution problem in our territory.
But hey, make hay while the sun shines, these last 8 days have been exceptionally good for exercising in the abnormally fresh air.
Lower winds from the south or southeast , midlevel winds are to be found more from clockwise direction , more clockwise in proportion to increasing altitude. Upper level winds strong (70-120 knots) from the west. All this ensures no recirculation of bad air.
Quick , take time to enjoy this totally abnormal fresh air.
Sorry but please do not expect it to last longer.

Guava you talk such nonsense - Don't you know that the fresh air is due to the anti pollution measures taken by our benevolent government. It is proof that the 'no idle you engine rule' works!!

Here's a hot tip for you young fellas that need to work on your big picture skills.
If you really want to save the planet & improve the air pollution in Hong Kong we should all drive Porsche 911's like I do. People laugh and say you have small man bits but at the end of the day chicks dig a hairy chest, gold chains and a fast car. Throw on a yellow skivvy & some cow boy boots and you'll have them eating out of you palm.

I've seen the first electric car charging stations popping up in Hong Kong ...
maybe it's time to get that Tesla, and start driving circles around Captn "hairy chest" Parker and his 911 ....

I vote that you all get an electric car. That way we can all breathe better air because electric energy is so much more efficient than the petrol engine.

Of course the overall efficiency of a EV depends on the way the electricity is produced, but even with a heavily coal dependent electric grid as in China (or the US for that matter) an EV gets off better in overall emissons ...
Furthermore it shifts the emissions away from the roadside (directly under people's noses to breathe in, which here in HK is one of the main health hazards)
And - as a side note - why do you think that people who are spending 109,000 US$ on an Electric Sportscar won't get the solar panel package to charge it?

I agree my first comment is a little flippant.
I already understand that an electric motor is substantially more efficient than an internal combustion engine (of the style in a car).
However I remain very unconvinced that in Hong Kong and Southern China with its massive dirty coal power production that we will actually be substantially better off for the amount of money spent. I'd love to see some factual data to prove otherwise. Every article that I have read highlights improvements as long as you are not just using coal for electricity.
I have no problem with the concept of a cleaner electricity grid producing a clear cut winner. My problem is with the electricity production style in this area of the world.
To answer your question - why don't they buy the solar panel. My answer - because its trendy to have the car (tesla) but they don't get a trendy feel from having a solar panel. And yes given it's cost, I do believe that the majority of those who have bought the tesla are doing so because its trendy.
