Au Contraire

My bonus will speak for itself. Enjoying your 13th month?

How many pilots in the last year have we had take SLS, convert to COS 08 (whether voluntary or involuntary i.e. bases) and all the others that help the company (the list is too long but you know what they are i.e. discretion/Gday callouts.

Pilots are stupid, have short memories, cares for oneself, will work for free or below industry standard, accept lower conditions without contest, plus others that degrade the pilot’s conditions.

I must say you are accurate that even a line pilot can figure it out, but I can’t say we have average line pilots. You keep coming up to the same problem and you think the same solution will work. We call it “STUPIDITY” but you may call it what you like.

The DFO has done a remarkable job and has everyone living in fear i.e. if I don’t take SLS or use discretion, I will not be upgraded or be on the top of the list to get terminated and you are quite right in your assumption.

Please stopping writing ASR’s as this is an internal company process and the DFO manipulates the outcome. Writing ASR’s do not carry any weight as we do what we want, when we want. It is futile. The Corporate Safety Department may voice their concern but in the end nothing will change. How many have written ASR’s about certain flights and has it changed? The DFO manipulates this solely and has nothing but contempt for The Corporate Safety Department. They are but a thorn in his side.

The DFO has a safety net from the CEO when dealing with Corporate Safety as the GMA/Head of Scheduling/Crew Control is protected by the DFO when dealing with interpretations of the AFTL’s, Scheduling matters, etc. Some believe The Corporate Safety Department answers directly to the CEO but now you know how it works.

If you write MOR’s, in the long run, it is still futile. When working with the CAD we will have to make changes but only for a few months and then revert back to our old operations, if the CAD demand we change (we have a special relationship). Remember, pilots have short memories and it will take months of ASR’s (see above) and if the MOR’s return, we will make changes only for a couple of months if change is demanded.

Over the years the DFO has managed to keep salaries status quo, reduce the conditions of service (i.e. bypass pay) of all pilots, increased productivity by 40% through integrated patterns, over manning bases, interpretations of the AFTL’s (i.e. 16.3), rostering duties within 5 minutes of the duty AFTL limit (all pilots are expected to use discretion), intimate pilots into taking SLS, etc.

Each morning the DFO calls a meeting with all the Chief Pilots to oversee the previous days delays. If the Crew on any of the delayed flights is seen not acting in the best interest of the Company, the DFO will ask the respective Chief Pilot to discuss the situation with the crew involved. The part in Volume 1 where “the Captain’s decision on discretion will be unquestioned and final” is not necessarily true. The DFO’s belief is; you will be questioned, it is our right and if you stranded 300-400 passengers we what to know why. We don’t care if you are fatigued. Complete the flight and write an ASR (see above).

Fatigue:

In the long term the DFO does not actually care. He has given the scheduling department the protection to roster all pilots to the maximum hours possible regardless of base. You will see London based pilots operating early morning Manila’s to increase their productivity. We don’t care about physiological rostering and we treat the AFTL’s with impunity. Write an ASR (see above). Did it help?

It is all about being productive and when the pilots are productive, we make money. When we make money, we get a bonus. The DFO receives an immense bonus to do what he does, regardless of safety. We like mottos but Management rarely stick by them; they are there for non-management employees. Safety First is one such motto.

The DFO and the Industrial Manager will never be tried for perjury so keep dreaming. The transcripts, past and present, speak for themselves. The DFO is confident and has the support of his family. They are quite proud of what the DFO has done to the 49ers, having a link in the tragic death of two, in the name of business. He still holds his head high when walking the street. He still sleeps well at night and he wants to put this behind him. You can do the same.

Appeal, of course we will appeal. It is not about being right or wrong, it is about the balance of control. We unequivocally cannot have the balance of power/control lean towards the employee group; we must maintain that control/fear over our employees. If it costs money, so be it. A mere $60-70 million, which took 8-9 years to collect, is a pittance to our group. Just like the cargo fiasco and no one is accountable. In the long run we have made more money. The $60-70 million is worth every penny when it comes to control/fear/power and unconcerned if we have to do it again. We will do it differently next time and yes we are making a list.

Thanks for helping out and voluntarily taking SLS, that money will help with the appeal accounts and yes you will do it again if asked. Some may whine at first but with a couple of direct emails or phone calls will have most signing up for new SLS. It works.

To My Bonus.

Happy New Year
