For those that still have doubts that criminals don't dress up as cops or that some cops don't have criminal streaks look at the following link.
The difference between South Africa and the rest of the world is that criminally inclined cops tend not to wear their uniforms when commiting crimes.
Remember also that it could be common criminals wearing a uniform similar to a police uniform. Most eyewitnesses don't notice the small details when as one of the witnesses in the story says:

Spent 15 years outside SA and have two 1st world passports. Admit I did not feel safe for many years after returning to SA but violent crime is now way down and I definitely feel a lot safer than I ever have
So I guess now that you feel safer and crime is down (impossible to know as the government don't release crime figures, but they like to create the impression before the Soccer W.C. ) you have removed the electric wires, the double brick 8 foot fence, the burglar bars, the armed response, the laser pick up's, the security door isolating the living area from the sleeping area etc.

Crime on the decline???

Crime fears grow as South Africa readies for football World Cup | World news | The Guardian
The following correction was printed in the Guardian's Corrections and clarifications column, Saturday 26 September 2009
In the article below about rising crime in South Africa we reported that business thefts rose by 41% between 2007-08 and 2008-09, and residential burglaries by 27%. In fact, these are the figures for business and residential robberies, which include the direct threat or use of violence by the perpetrator. The comparable figures for burglaries – that is, acts where no direct threat of violence is involved – are an 11.1% rise for businesses and a 3.7% rise for residences.
You might be immune to this, but to most people, like a C.X. flight attendant or anyone from the first world, this is a frightening read

What started as a thread for Outport security has turned into a "the sky is falling" thread and it sounds as if South Africa is a living Hell by some of the posts here which I'd say are unfair!
