Question Pay Scale in Cathay Pacific

Does anyone know the Pay Scale of a first year S/O in Cathay Pacific? From some forum threads, I saw that someone posted the salary of S/O, JFO, FO...etc. However, the post is on Year 2003. Is it still valid now?

Thank you for your help!

Thank you for your information.

I have also found the above figures in some threads of this forum. However, someone said that it is B scale and is no longer applicable for new pilots joing now. New pilots will be on C or even D scale. Is it true? Or the above pay scale is still valid now?

I have not heard of any other scales other than A and B. Maybe someone who's been in the company longer will have heard of these or rumours of the introduction of them.

In any case, when you get through the first interview, and are invited for a second one, they will tell you in the letter what your starting salary will be. Just compare it to the list and see if there are any changes.

Over the last few years the tax rate in Hong Kong has been steadily increasing. In the 2004/05 tax year, which was the final year of increases in personal tax rates in the current round, tax was calculated as follows:

Single tax free allowance: HK$100,000.00
Married tax free allowance: HK$200,000.00

After deducting the above relevant tax free allowance, the marginal tax rates are as follows:

First HK$30,000.00 = 2%
Next HK$30,000.00 = 8%
Next HK$30,000.00 = 14%
Remainder = 20%

Therefore if you are on a starting salary of HK$386,556.00 as a married S/O, the tax on your basic salary would be calculated as follows:

First HK$200,000.00 is tax free.
Next HK$30,000.00 @ 2% = HK$600.00
Next HK$30,000.00 @ 8% = HK$2400.00
Next HK$30,000.00 @ 14% = HK$4200.00
Remaining HK$96,556.00 @ 20% = HK$19,311.20

Total Tax on income = HK$26,511.20

Tax is also levied on your housing allowance but at different rates depending on whether you take it as a cash allowance or rental assistance. You have also got to consider Provisional tax. Basically in your first year they will tax you twice. You will get a credit for the provisional tax paid in your next years tax, though if you get a promotion and or additional pay through bonuses etc, provisional tax can be an ongoing pain in the butt. Luckily for me I new it was going to be a shocker this financial year and allowed for it. Some I fear are going to get a shock when they get their tax assessment for 2004/05.

I personally put aside 20% of everything I earn, income, allowances and bonuses to pay the tax at the end of the year.

Thanks to you both for the heads up on the tax situation. I guess I'll get good at picking everyones brain on the flight deck to get my head around the various tax issues.
I'm used to automatically having a tax amount withheld from my salary, Do I understand correctly that I will be paid the pre tax amount and it is up to me to put some aside for a tax bill at the end of the Year?

Question

My friend has applied the cadet pilot programme recently. He has gone through the 5 interviews already. However, he was not told any information on the Pay Scale or salary. But from above, it is said that he will know the pay scale or salary amount in the second interview. May I ask if anyone knows the reason for the difference? Does anyone has some updated information on this?

Thank you very much!

From the PwC HK website I found this information on HK tax rates:

"Tax Rates

Salaries tax is charged at the following rates:

Rates of Tax 2005/2006
First $30,000 at 2%
Next $30,000 at 8%
Next $30,000 at 14%
On the remainder 20%

Standard rate 16%

The maximum tax, however, is limited to tax at the standard rate (16%) on the net assessable income (after any business deductions) less concessionary deductions but without the deduction of personal allowances."

Does this last paragraph mean that for a first year single SO the max tax payable would be 16% of HK$286556.00 (HK$45848.96) or would it be HK$46511.20 using the tax rates above? If I read this correctly the cross over between using the different tax rates and simply using the standard rate is HK$270000 taxable income (after deductions) which equals HK$43200 tax either way.

One website also stated that for rental allowances a flat rate of 10% was charged, is this correct?

The other question I have is to take advantage of the married tax free allowance does your wife need to live in HK with you?
This is the first time I have ever heard that being married can actually save you money.

Silberfuchs

I'll be happy to swap places with you. Give me your income and I'll pay your $229,000 tax bill.

With a dependant spouse and two kids, the tax rate for a first year SO is 3.8%. Wow!
