Flying in Sierra Leone
Hey 126,7
Thanx for the reply. Do you have first hand experience of Sierra Leone?? I dont want to seem naieve I know about the civil war and the unrest, well a little. But is it that tough down there for an outsider. What exactly can be expected in this part of the world? This would be my first foray into African aviation.
Again any oppinions welcome.

Hi Guys. I have been based in Sierra Leone for the past 2 years, and flying to 4 different countries around. Great place to be based !!! Best beaches, nice night life, and 8 months of great weather (Avoid June to September).
Have a look on www.lonelyplanet.com
And indeed, Gunship will tell you more...

Ok ... ok .. ok ...
Sjees REAL ORCA leave me I was sleeping bru .. I really WORK these days ... let me quickly try before I fall asleep ...
Ok ther you have it ... 126,7 has spoken ... good night ...
Ok seriously but I will just tell you guys as the African PPRUNERS became like friends you know so let me rather whisper .. Sierra Leone is the best cept secret. We have the most wonderful beaches. Restaurants, bar's , pubs, disco's night clubs ... girls (if you are into them) the boys from Europe LOVE them and they love you for your money ... fishing is fantastic - I fish every Saturday, the weather - ja boet very **** for flying - even now the harmattan is bad ! Rainy season VERY bad .. but overhaul an excellent place to stay and live !
Uhmm so I was saying yes it is a bad place to live but the flying in bad weather is good ...
Ok seriously enigma - what are you coming to do ? I dunno of jobs other than the UN CItation ? I am sad to say I dunno Split bus ... bru phone me on 620020 and wake me up I need a dop !
Been here 4 years and the only flying now is Mi-8 flights and a few Puma's from the UN. The odd Mi-24 just for the show and a few airlines coming in every day. Internal no flying other than those mentioned and Paramount a Mi-8 operator.
My final say (sorry disagreeing COMPLETELY from you 126,7) Freetown must be the safest city in Africa right now ... take note ... right now and for the past year ... this is Africa bru and things change overnight .. been here for 4 years ,,, see it all .. have the T-Shirt
Can I sleep now ORCA ?
126,7 : "My personal opinion. Get a job elsewhere if you can. The place isnt for europeans. "

Hi Guns.
I fully agree with you regarding Freetown. By the way spoke to Mr Paul D. last week. He also would like to come around one of these days, if you remember him.
But I am not flying the Slotation, even if it did fly these past few days (a monthly record, 8 hours in 2 days !!!)

Lo Pilot31,
Sierra Leone is VERY, VERY expensive.
Now I know for a South African outside the RSA everything but believe me ask Split Bus and any nationality - even the Poms, complains.
The standards that I am sure you are used to : (running water, electricity works at night 80% of the time, but generator back - up is essential), telephone line (hard to come -bye for the net of course) and in secure compound on the Western Side - Sea Side of Freetown ...
A single room will cost you a min of $800 p/m and normally 3 months in advance but expect to pay $1 to $1.2k if it has a small kitchen and sitting room.
A 3 bedroom house (unfurnished) will cost you between $8k to $15k per year (paid in advance bru ...
A 3 bedroom house (furnished ) from $10k upwards ...
Keep in mind my above remarks re generator etc .. location is very important.
Spur road has the best power - that is where the Vice Pres stays, Most of the Embacys, Brit High Comision, Split Bus and Gunns
This are 's power is much better, water flow and view. With the view comes a sea breeze, so no need for aircon's running all night.
You said family .. MALARIA is a MASSIVE threat for kids and adults alike ... never mind HIV :o
A beer will cost you from $.50 to $ 2 at MAmaba Point (just been there this afternoon) so depending if you buy from the guy with a Coeman on the head or Mamba Point - to be seen with the Brit High Commisioner.
Food is extremely expensive and vegetables of very poor quality.
I love it here but will never bring my family .. they just come for visits. There are four South African families and they are all very happy and the schooling goed from "BREINLYN" to the International school ($5k per year !)
So a great place - personally I do not think for a family - but debatable - the nice things like diving, warm sea, fishing, off - road, I have mentioned before.
Please pose more questions which I might have missed - I have a break between cricket
Just as a last remark : friends got a house (6 bedroom) , no a/c , no generator , unfurnished, bad area and no view , no breeze for $10k per year paid in advance .. bargain but it will cost them a lot to make it liveable.
Wine : 10 times the price as in SA, Whiskey about 5 times and Water $1 per liter.... sjes cheers I am off for a Heineken

Caribbean is much nicer, with almost the same qualities, prices and people, but no malaria and no tracers. and you can even watch the West Indie team beat the Springboks....... Guns tell me that didnt happen.
