Alternatives to Gatwick for JAA Class 1
Hello all,
What are the alternatives to taking the initial class one medical in the UK at Gatwick?
I am asking because I find the fee quite staggering and am sure it must be cheaper in other JAA member states. By the time an airfare + accommodation is added in my foofoo valve will be going far too fast anyway
What I am wondering is - can I go to any JAA state to do the medical and then do the CPL/IR training in the UK? Has anybody done this or heard of someone who has?
Details would be useful. Cheers,
LF

Initial class one costs about €500 in Spain and €604 in Dublin. May be cheaper else where. However I really doubt you will make any kind of savings once you factor in travel time \ hassle. Plus in the event of any issue occuring with your medical you may have additional tests which could have you travelling back and forth.
Go on and give the CAA your cash Best of luck with it where ever you end up

The initial JAA Class 1 was EUR170 this January in Prague. VAT on services is 5%.
You get it right there and then.
If you take a copy of the full medical report on the day, and get a form from the UK CAA printed out before and filled in by the Czech AME, they will give you a CAA UK JAR medical for it, which you need for licence issue in the UK.
Please find their contacts on google, some of them speak good English, all of them fly. Oh, and enjoy Prague!
cheers, IP

Be careful. I believe that you have to do the Initial Class one medical at Gatwick if you have done the writtens in UK, in order for licence issue. Better check on that. Subsequent medicals can be issued by any JAR AME.

IP,
So far I have not managed to make contact with any of the AME's in the list...and on the two occasions I've got through on the numbers, I've been unable to communicate (or have had the phone slammed down )...By female voices - possibly secretaries?
How exactly did you go about booking your Class One when you were there? I'm not doubting the method; its just looking a bit flaky at the moment!
Do you live over in the Czech Republic? If so, could you check out the contact numbers, or put the number with the UK dialling code up for reference?
Thanks for your help,
LF

yes, i live in PRG, so that was pretty easy. I don't speak (sufficient) Czech yet, so I just called and tried English.
Try Dr Petr Halata, who was most helpful and put a lady on my side to accompany me to the relevant places in the hospital. surely I wouldn't have got lost, but who'd say no?!
his phone is: 00420 (for Czech), followed by 973 212 429. this was his direct line in January 2005.
Hope this works, as I am out of the country for a while, I cannot check it myself.
cheers, IP
