A plane carrying 28 passengers was forced to divert to a rural airport today after an engine failed as it tried to land at a West Australian gold mine.
The plane landed safely at Wiluna, 947km north of Perth, about 8.20am (WST), the Australian Transport Safety Bureau said today.
The aircraft had been diverted to Wiluna after it developed engine trouble as it tried to land at Newmont’s Jun Dee mine, 40km north-east of Wiluna, police said.
"On trying to land at the mine site, one of the engines has failed and the plane has been diverted to Wiluna where it landed safely," a police spokeswoman said.
None of the 28 passengers were injured.
They were taken by bus to the mine site.

Wouldn't have been surprised to her that it was Fux-trot though!! P.O.S. that was...
WIN last night, amusingly enough, reported the said incident with 28 pax.. and then showed file footage of WAX taxiing around at Perth. I'd KILL to see 28 pax in an M23!!!

For many reasons...A short bus trip for the pax is not the top priority.
Sometimes its better to go into a sealed strip with lighting so maintenance can come out at all hours if its required.
A town has hospitals etc...more civilisation if the worst does happen.
Then theres weather, what happens if the strip floods the next day?
Theres never just one thing to consider...

From a commercial perspective, yes, getting the pax to the destination is the best option.
From a safety perspective however, the best option was to divert to Wiluna, which is a much preferable option to Jundee if you have a crippled aircraft on your hands, or at least in yesterday's case it was. 10 point to the crew!

Braz, I should have said "I wouldn't have been surprised if it HAD been Fox"... I knew it was XUE... but all the same, like I said, I remember XUF being a POS at the best of times... Maybe they've worked her out by now 
Everyone else beat me to it, Wiluna best probable option at the time for all the abovementioned reasons. Also easier to co-ordinate rescue flights/mx from Wiluna rather than the mine site, that can be great fun especially in sh!t wx and the phones are down..! It's a pain in the ass to have a u/s aircraft keeping the mine stip out of action for the best part of a day while the gingerbeers do their thing...
Media camps, ah yes, fun days those are! All the pax will start with the "But I don't want to fly on that deathtrap" etc etc. Well now with how much they hate the M23 and this one that just leaves the Dash hey!!
I bet RF and his crew were having kittens while this was going on! Almost makes me nostalgic.... almost

I think that was an accidental hit of the enter button there...!
However, I'm going to hazard a guess that it was a company a/c, thus potentially able to fly some/all of the stranded pax back to PH or on to JUN if required???

Damn, that was my second guess....
All in all, a pretty regular (as in, nothing to get too worked up about) occurence that the media took ahold of, as usual. Nowhere near as dramatic as Eagle's last week or two!! Probably felt like it to the pax though!

Apparently you are quite correct, rumour has it that this was not the worst of it, it will make an interesting read when the ATSB gets involved, this could have made Lockhart River the second worst aviation accident in 18 years.

people close to the action reported that the aircraft got very out of shape, i.e. very steep turn, very close to the ground.....what facilities make wiluna a better choice besides a shorter runway and noone expecting you?

They aren't cadets, actually more of Skippers' most senior guys, cadets tend to get on the metro.
'Most senior guys'... If you've worked for Skippers longer than 3 weeks your considered senior these days. Sad really.
I have been to both Jundee and Wiluna many, many, many times and I still cannot understand why you would leave a perfectly good almost 2km long airstrip behind you and fly to Wiluna??? Don't tell me because of rescue missions etc. Jundee has runway lighting, an RNAV approach, a very large fuel supply and a very large parking area. Not to mention the medical personal (and the ambo) which await every arrival and departure from the airstrip for these FIFO flight's! They would've arrived at the aircraft alot quicker than anyone at Wiluna if needed...
To quote the Brasilia QRH
LAND AS SOON AS POSSIBLE OR LAND AT NEAREST
SUITABLE AIRPORT
An emergency will be declared. A landing should be
accomplished at the nearest suitable airfield considering the
severity of the emergency, weather conditions, field facilities,
ambient lighting, aircraft gross weight and command guidance.
Jundee or Wiluna??? I know where i'd be landing.
