Thanks for that Maxell.

Just printing the document now. No doubt the time will come (sooner or later) when I'll have to do a rebuild and this procedure should help to ease the pain.

Or to keep it even simpler just go START-run and type in sfc /scannow. Put your xp cd in the drive and go for tea.

When you return all your system files will have been checked and replaced as necessary and all your other stuff will remain as is. It is best if you slipstream SP2 into your CD as this will minimise the amount of subsequent updating.
