Also, how big is the whole site, with all the old threads etc..?

Can't help on the user/visitor numbers. But if you use the sidebar on your browser, I am using Netscape 7 on MacOS9.2.2, It states that the site has 20375 pages with 520 external links.
Also it is the 12057th most popular site on the web.

So, over 12,000 more popular sites on the Web than this!:o

Only 12,000? Thats pretty good, considering there the numbers sites like Yahoo, Google, BBC, Reuters, NASA, football sites etc etc must get. And it is a specialised forum.

For August (which was a pretty average month, stats wise) the figures look like this:

Total Pages: 9,609,513

Total Visits: 723,426

Total GigaBytes: 289


Broken down into daily stats ( Average) and (Max)

Pages per Day: (309,984) (361,368)

Visits per Day: (23,336) (27,403)

GigaBytes per Day: (9.3) (11)


W.r.t that last one - imagine if somebody connected to your computer and day-in day-out downloaded over 9 Gig of data from it !

PPRuNe uses some serious bandwidth, and hence why we have to have the banner ad's to pay for it !

Has the 'new' server reached it's limits?.

Been getting a lot of "The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later." messages lately.

Danza, I can not vouch for the veracity; but when logged on to Pprune the browser side bar states 'Popularity: in the top 12057 sites on the web.' Presumably this is generated by the Netscape/AOL search 'bots.

I would love it if PPRuNe would let folks who log on to log in at almost any time - as a "member" I hate getting the "server too busy message" when I can, during my lunchbreak, actually attempt to log in....especially when I figure that there must be a lot of "non-members" browsing at the time!!!

We have to achieve a balance between one the one hand having too many people accessing the board which slows it down too much to be usable, and on the other hand temporarily turning people away witha "too busy" message.

As the response time is still fairly reasonable when we were turning people away, I've increased the maximum load the server is prepared to accept.

Anyone know roughly how many websites there are on the WWW? If there are say 1 million websites then that puts PPRuNe in the top 2% of websites.

To prevent server overload we have a limiter on the software. If there are more than 700 users on at once or the server load average goes over 12 then you will get the server busy message. You should retry in a few seconds and you will eventually get through. Unfortunately the busiest time on PPRuNe is around 1200 UTC every day.

The number of web sites on the WWW was reported on another thread recently.The figure was in excess of 162 Million (and is still growing exponentially).

The figure is actually the number of domains registered, which may actually be slightly more than the number of web sites.

This probably means that PPRune is actually in the top 0.1% of Web-sites. Wow!

According to http://www.netcraft.com/survey/, who like to count this sort of thing, there are about 36 million websites, which puts pprune in the top 0.03 %

Well, we know from the dot.com bust some of the things you do not do, such as ignore profits. Also, don't buy ads on the Super Bowl or sponsor a PPRUNE Stadium.

A few thoughts -- not professional advice! . . .

1. It is early in Internet years. Like the early days of the Model T, when you didn't go anywhere without a mechanic. 15 years is a long time. New revenue models will surely emerge that are not envisioned today. Or, ones not widely accepted today may become more accepted (such as a subscription model). Most people who tried to force Internet profits are broke now. The most valuable asset is the community and user base, and it will become more valuable as these new revenue models emerge.

2. The advertising suggestion above is good. I see a lot of aviation-specific ads, which makes sense. Marketers for non-aviation goods and services -- hotels, clothing, computers, etc. -- should also want to efficiently reach the pilot demographic. I don't see ads for them. Go to those folks directly, if not doing so now.

3. Sell shares in PPRUNE. You might be surprised at the number of persons on this site that would invest a few thousand dollars for a minority interest in PPRUNE. You can keep control. The Farnborough F1 Project tried such a direct investment approach (instead of going public), but I don't know how well it did -- request a copy of their investors package and see if that might not be a model.

4. In addition to personal titles (which I'm still working on :-/), make it easy to accept contributions. (The Amazon Honor System, or Paypal (or equivalent.) Do I want to engage in a lenghty correspondence to contribute $10? No. Will I contribute $10 if I just have to click a link on the home page? Yes. And I'll probably do it again in the future if I continue to use the site.

What about all the PPRuNe members? Looking at the list and the last posts they have made there are some 75 percent which never participate. You do not have to be a member to read the forums. Is there a plan to clean the non-participants out?

Also, if you do not log off in between sessions does the user name stay in the top-bar? The PPRuNe forums window is getting lower and lower with a top bar crammed with names of those who are browsing. Are they actually there?

Speaking with my marketing 'guru' hat on....I would imagine that advertisers would tear limb from limb to be able to advertise on PPRuNe!

Why?

Pilots are affluent (comparitavely), well-educated - what the statisticians call AB standard people - just look at the range of people and specialisms on Jet Blast.

I would imagine high quality companies such as BMW, Le Meridien et al would love to be able to so closely target such a high quality bunch of people.

Danny....take your figures together with some guff about how professional, intelligent, affluent pilots to such companies and I would hope you'll get a favourable response.
