rule 5 and efato training
In the may issue of Pilot page 75 is a very interesting letter about the legal status of the EFATO training and rule 5.......comments from the floor please.
|
CAA legal department have said that they do not consider an EFATO to be standard aviation practice, That is of course just their opinion and until a court decides nobody will be any the wiser.
|
In which case, why is an EFATO a mandatory item in the PPL Skill Test and the SEP Class Rating Skill Test, as well as the SEP Class Rating Proficiency Check?? Or is the CAA admitting that, just as in the JAA theory exams, people are being tested on things which have no relevance??
|
What a load of nonsense. Trust our CAA to go and make a decision as plainly daft as this.
WWW |
The CAA legal department do not write the requirements consequently their legal opinion is at odds with the training requirement. There is a BALPA meeting in the near future to discuss the issue.
|
Hello!! Welcome to planet Earth!! What on earth does a BALPA meeting need to consider this for?? It's obvious that the department in question is in need of aeronautical education. Allegedly!! If they can't understand that EFATO training is part of normal flying training, then what on earth are they doing advising the CAA??
Get much done today, Blueline?? |
Thanks for the points of view guys i,m going to an instructor refresher seminar soon and the subject is on the program, that should make for an interesting chat !
My own view is that the legal department of the CAA is at the root of this stupidity (its not the first time they have got in the way of good practice, just look at the crankshaft inspection debacal)so letts not give the opps side of the CAA a hard time just yet. I think the best thing to do is to get AOPA , BALPA and who ever else is interested to pressure the CAA to get this thing fixed if that dont work then write to your MP, that usualy makes the CAA management do something as it starts to threaten the index linked pension. Simulating EFATO can be done at a safe altitude,at the top of a climb out towards the practice area.
|
2R up to a point you are right at the start of the EFATO training a high level failure will teach the student the attitude change and the failure drills but it wont help with field selection and and positioning the aircraft to make a safe landing ,it is important that the student can see clearly the outcome of the exercise be it good or bad.
|
EFATO at top of climb ? WAKE UP!
There is nothing that stirs the student more than the close proximity of terrain and the lure of a turn back. Are we teaching the students to stay alive or are we just teaching them ? ____________________ No free beer for you |
It's only the bit at the bottom that really matters. (Otherwise, why not do simulated night flying by day when it doesn't disturb people so much. Don't practise stalling or spinning because it's too dangerous, etc).

Simulating bad weather is easy,Just close your eyes.
I like to train them high first so if a mistake is made ,it is not their last mistake. ;) |
