Converting overseas AFI rating
 

Q. How and where can I go about converting my overseas AFI rating to one I can use here in the UK ?

I been back from working overseas for a little while and am likely to be here for some time. I have a PPL, night etc and an AFI for that PPL. I've read GID 34 from the CAA but it said that you have to have to the CPL knowledge before starting a course. First problem - where can I do a correspondence course for the JAR-CPL(A) with a view to instructing full time ? I'm quite happy to instruct on a PPL until I've done the CPL bit.
Second problem - anyone know of a school that does conversions or has had experience of converting an overseas rating to a JAA one ?

With having an overseas instructor rating, you will only have to do half a JAA instructor course (time wise).
Go where you like for the CPL theory course, which does not have to be run in conjunction with the instructor course. The two are very seperate.

The only place (that I'm aware of) that are approved to run JAR CPL groundschool courses are 4 forces. PPSC are rumoured to be starting them as well but nothing definate yet.

The JAR CPL exams aren't even written yet are they? I think you'll have to go and do a full ATPL theory until they sort that one out.

As Delta T says, the conversion is a half of a normal JAR FI course (15 hours flying, some ground time (30 hours???), and a skill test at the end).

Any place that does normal JAR FI courses should be able to do the conversion. But don't go to Delta T's mob, because Essex weather is crap :)

4Forces are approved for the JAR CPL modular theoretical knowledge course - it's safe to assume that there are JAR CPL exams and there is no need to do the ATPL exams if not required.

If 4 Forces early CPL stuff is anything like their early ATPL notes....hang on until someone else comes up with a course!

On the wannabees thread there is a post that suggests that you may still be able to do the CAA CPL exams in pursuit of a JAA CPL - I have my doubts but does anybody know for sure ?

The post you refer to on the Wannabes forum is by an individual who has misread the SRG information. It refers to CAA CPL(H). The deadline to complete CAA CPL(A) was last month, and you would have to have been in the system for about 18months to qualify.
