Wages difference Rotary v Fixed Wing
 

Hope you dont mind me posting on here as I am not an Instructor.I know the majority of Fixed wing I Instructors are poorly paid,I was wondering if it was the same for Rotary Instructors.

Rotary wing instructors get paid about four times as much for each hour in the air.
Problem is, not as much work about.
If I knew it wouldn't p**s people off, I'd do it for next to nothing.
(some anonymous people think I already do)
Such is life!!

Microlight instructors also get paid approximately twice as much. They are also paid for ground instruction and only need a PPL.

Quite simply microlights and helicopters are not a route to the airlines.

Thanks Chaps,I have no wish to fly Helicopters I was just wondering if Rotor Instructors faired any better than Fixed Wing Instructors.

I guess that's why 5 pilots have left my company in the last 2 manths to fly for 'go' and Maersk.

In isolation they are not, but if you employ pilots with dual qualifications they will clearly take advantage of the higher salary whilst seeking an even higher salary.
The moral is, only employ rotary qualified pilots!

As I understand it, there was work for heli instructors till last year, when they changed the rules so that you had to get a CPL(H) before instructing. So last year every PPL(H) with 200 hours P1 who had ever even vaguely thought about instructing did an AFIC course, so that the world is now awash with newly qualified AFI(H)'s. It should even out in a couple of years. At least I hope it does!

My understanding of the FW/RW Instructor debate is that Stuckwing instructors get very little per hour but nearly always get a retainer which condsiderably enhances their perhour rate.
Eggbeaters on the other hand get paid per hour only with very few on retainers so no flying means no pay.
I have left instructing(H) for a while as there are far too many people in the industry at the moment with little chance of making a reasonable salary.

Yes, yes, fixed wing instructors are paid poorly, but what is that? whats that gonna be per year? like £10,000 or £20,000 or what?
Also if u have a ppl with 200 hours u cant just become an instructor can u? dont u have to have an imc and night rating or something? do u need a multi engine rating?
What exact qualifications do u need to be an instructor and how many hours?

I think being an instructor would be a fun job, more fun than flying an airline, if not as well paid
