Requirements to instruct IMC

Can anyone please help.

I have CPL / IR, Frozen ATPL, although the IR has lapsed (it's over 12 months old and has not been renewed yet)and FI (R). How many hours is the IMC Instructor rating, I've heard 2 differing stories :-

1) It's 5 hours
2) It's 12 hours

Can anyone please clarify the situation ?

First thing is that, before you can get the 'no applied IF' restriction removed from your FI rating you must get the '(R)' bit removed. The old AFI rating did not have this problem.

If you hold a UK CPL then you have the priviliges of an IMC rating so you can teach for it (once the restrictions are removed). If you have a JAA CPL then you don't have the IMC; howver, the IR can count as an IMC rating for 25 months, although you would need to have some form of licence endorsement to that effect.

Check out the 'Instructing for Instrument Rating' thread. Watford rarely speaks with forked tongue!

As Stan says you must either have the FI Restriction removed or meet the full stand alone IRI entry criteria of 800 hours in accordance with IFR etc.

The course to remove the no applied IF restriction is 5 hours flying and 35 hours ground training. You then take a test with a FIE and apply to have the restriction removed.

Provided you have a UK CPL you will then be able to teach for the IMC rating. If you hold a JAA licence you will require either a valid IMC or IR as well.
