Recent FI Seminar recommendations?
 

Evening all,

I wondered if anyone had any recent experience with either FPT UK (Shoreham) or On-Track Aviation (Wellesbourne) with regards to their FI seminars? I know it's all online at the moment, but that aside, is either one any better than the other? I understand the FPT UK seminar is run in conjunction with Pooley's who previously ran their own seminars which had great reviews, I've heard On-Track are good but larger class sizes? I've narrowed my decision down to these two due to the dates they have available.

They are all the same so any will do. They must follow a rigid format and content. In my view you need only to select the one that is the most convenient to you.

I recently attended the On-Track online seminar and thought it was very good. It's professionally run with relevant content and all the powerpoint presentations were available to download for a few days before to review the presentations. The number of attendees wasn't a concern, but on the second day we were split into 'breakout rooms' with maybe 8-10 attendees which allowed a bit more interaction. The presenters are all incredibly experienced in their field and no question was left unanswered even though we had just left the EU with all the associated changes etc.

I have no experience of FPT, but I wouldn't hesitate to use On-Track again. I hope that the online version will continue to be available when life returns to normal as it was much more convenient than a trip to Wellesbourne or wherever.

Thanks for your advice, for my last question, would you need a few weeks to prepare if you haven’t instructed for some years (but are in the airlines and fly SEP recreationally), or would you think a few days before enough time to prep if anything more than their advance course material is necessary?

You'll need the preparation for the AoC but not for the Seminar. A read of Standards Doc 10 is a good idea. Following the seminar you may get some good ideas on what to revise prior to an AoC.

I refreshed with the on-track online seminar about 6 months ago. It was very well done, perhaps expensive, but that's just the market. I'd probably use them again - certainly vastly better than the AOPA seminar I did previously.

I generally also do the annual BMAA seminar, which are cheap, and excellent - but don't actually count for any legal requirements. There's another one coming up soon.

On day 2 what do you do in the workshop sessions, do you have to give a presentation or answer questions in your smaller groups ? The last one I attended you had to give a presentation as a group to all the others attending, but that was not on line !

I can't answer for other providers, but for the on-line seminars On-Track have a simple question, answer, discussion format in breakout groups of around 10 which lasts for 2 hours. The tutors nominate a delegate to answer the question which can then lead to a wider discussion. Before Covid, the seminars had a morning of presentations given by groups of delegates base on topics they were given the previous day. When the seminars go back to being in-person, I suspect that what they'll revert to.
