Class 2 medical
 

Hi there,
Would really appreciate some assistance clarifying something (the CAA have a 30 waiting period on feedback. (Please don't give your opinion, I need Facts not opinions here.

Can one , as a class 2 medical holder become a flight instructor via this route:
1. PPL
2. ATPL exams
3. Hour Building
4. Flight Instructor course.

It would mean soooooooooo much to me if someone could clarify this simple thing, With a Yes or No.

As far as I'm aware Class 2 pilots can undertake Instrument Ratings?
and only Class 1 pilots can undertake CPL?

Yes, you can do that. It's what I've done. Only CPL exams are needed for the FI rating. I'm almost there with my FI rating. Don't forget the QXC needed for the FI course...300 miles with two intermediate landings. You would need a class1 medical if you intend to actually get a CPL.

Yes, I’ll be the second you can do what you propose although you don’t need the ATPL exams, CPL will suffice. If you are 100% positive you won’t want a CPL then you don’t need to enrol on a theory course at an ATO and can self certify you are ready to take the actual exams. However you won’t be able to obtain a CPL later if you decide to go alone.

You don’t even need to do the theory and can go straight for the FIC but you do need to demonstrate CPL theory throughout the course and you wouldn’t be able to teach the PPL (LAPL only). You can lift the LAPL restriction once you pass the exams.

CPL theory completed last year, FIC booked for August/September. Really looking forward to it, I have all pre-requisites. Just practicing various manoeuvres at the moment (well I will be once we get a decent spell of nice weather) in preparation for the pre-entry flight test.

The answer lies in the regulation
So a PPL holder may give instruction.

To Exercise the privileges of a PPL you need a Class 2 Medical Certificate.

Can a class 2 medical pilot undertake an Instrument rating?

The medical relates to the licence not the rating.
A PPL can hold a IR
The PPL only requires a Class 2 medical, you may require an audiogram.
You can even instruct and examine the IR on a PPL with a Class 2.
You cannot obtain or instruct for a CPL with a Class2.

I have one last spin-off question:

Its said that with 3 years of completing ATPLs, you need to complete your IR or your ATPLs 'expire' does this also apply to flight instructors (who may not actually want to do an IR? Is there any other way of keeping your exams from expiring?

You have 3 years to complete the CPL and IR before the ATPL exams expire, but for a FI rating the requirement is to have demonstrated CPL level knowledge and the exams remain permanently valid. If you consider that the hours requirement to get a FI is higher with a PPL than a CPL, not completing the CPL might be a false economy. There is no way to keep the exams valid past the 3 year point for an IR.

What Whopity said. If you intend to do the IR, do the ATPL not the CPL theory.

Whopity: Thanks and believe me if there was any chance of me ever being eligible for a Class 1 medical it would be my dream to undertake the CPL

My final question:

Can a Class 2 Medical holder:
1. Teach ATPL theory?
2. Become a PPL Examiner?

The answers are Yes and Yes. You state you would like to hold a Class 1 certificate. Have you actually been refused and if so have you considered a review of that decision by the AMS of the State where you were refused?

You don't need a medical certificate to teach ATPL theory.
