Why do we flare high during autorotation over rough ground?

What do you mean, "We"?

To avoid striking the tailrotor? Or am I missing something?

You need to get the ground speed to zero and avoid hitting the tail.

I've never heard of it and I've been teaching autos for years.

If you flare high, you just have further to fall when the flare runs out.

Protecting the TR is a good idea but you need to have some Nr left at the bottom to cushion the landing.
