Training - does the 12 year engine limit still apply?

I remember hearing/reading that EASA had a restriction on training with engines that were more than 12 years old, regardless of TBO hours. Now I am told that this is no longer the case, it is the responsibility of the ATO to be satisfied that the aircraft is "suitable". No-one can tell me where this is written.

Any comments, pointers to the appropriate document?

Here is the answer, which I believe to be correct. For airworthiness purposes, training is considered to be commercial, therefore no relaxation on the 12 year life, or TBO.
This could/should change when Part M light comes into effect.

...except when the aircraft is owned by the person receiving the training, so no, the debate continues!

Also, the 12 year and TBO are both subject to 2 x 10% extensions, on condition.

At the moment the rule still applies, but you won't find any recent reference to it, many have tried to find such a reference. There was a short period a number of months ago where the rule was thought to have gone away, as apparently confirmed by a CAA surveyor, but that verbal statement was later rescinded.

That was done in reply to implementation difficulties reported by some NAAs. Afterwards EASA has decided to include the guidance related to the extension of the TBO into the framework of the Rulemaking task Part-M GA Task Force (Phase II).
