Night Rating training

Hi folks,

Can someone please provide the definitive on the following please:

Can the training for a Night Rating be undertaken prior to a PPL being issued? There is a school of thought that because a rating is an extension of the privileges of a licence, training for a NR cannot be started until a licence is held.

Many thanks,

HW

Looking at the Regulation it is clear that a night rating has to be completed post LAPL and also post PPL(H). I can find nothing in the regulation that specifically prohibits an applicant for a PPL(A) from completing the night training prior to obtaining the licence.

As Whopity says, it's only clearly define for LAPL or PPL(H). Lasors used to say it was possible to do the Night rating as part of your ppl. No reference now, so guess it would depend on your ATO or RTF if they allow it. We do, but having said that I have yet to meet a student who I would sign off to do the Night solo...

Thanks for your responses on this both. I'm aware that the NR can longer form part of the PPL course as such (as the NQ could), but the steer my ATO is getting from CAA Standards is as stated in my first post, namely 'because a rating is an extension of the privileges of a licence, training for a NR cannot be started until a licence is held'. Whether this is an interpretation and/or assumption of basic licensing laws I don't know, but your replies and those from other sources I've referred to confirm there is currently nothing in the Regulation to prevent training starting before licence issue.

Watch this space!

..which I take to mean delivered to the nominated address and signed. Very restrictive as I think the Night Rating makes an excellent way of retaining continuity waiting for receipt of the licence.

Interesting the number of licences I'm offered for revalidation action that haven't been signed!

The CAAs job is to follow the regulation, not to offer its own interpretation and elaborate on it!
