I am unsure about how to fly this approach:
This is my interpretation, please correct me if I am wrong: When I get to the initial approach fix (the NDB) regardless of where I'm coming from I should reverse my course using the hold once I cross the ndb I fly 137 for one minute (baseturn maneuver) and then back to the ndb again and then fly 283 for 8 nm? is this correct? it seems very laborious with many turns.

You can also use the alternate procedure based on the holding pattern. Extend the downwind leg of the hold to 8 miles then turn inbound.

The reason for "all those turns" on an approach plate normally means there is something to avoid, or actually to help you get to the right place at the right time. Take a look at the NDB for LOWK sometime!
