FI or CRI for Cessna SET?

Dear all,

Could anyone help me with this question: Does a instructor for a Cessna SET course need to be a FI + SET rated or a CRI + SET rated pilot?

Furthermore does anybody know a ATO who provides this course in Europe?

Regards

The FI or CRI must have the SET on their licence (EASA) to teach but also need to be through an ATO which now limits options.
I found these in UK ,was going to put on my licence(i am already FI with 800 on van with other licence not instructional) but without confirmation of job offer will save my money.

So you say the instructor can be FI or CRI, both is fine as long as they are SET rated?
I hear different stories that the instructor must be a CRI and can not be a FI..?

justasmallfire 1st Feb 2014 11:57

yes but more importantly through an ATO.many instructors who are rated who used to teach SET are no longer able to teach towards the rating unless they and now at an ATO
An FI is allowed to teach toward class ratings if they hold that rating and have minimum experience on class(only MEP ect need extra training before teaching)
from CAP804
FCL.905.FI FI – Privileges and conditions
The privileges of an FI are to conduct flight instruction for the issue, revalidation or
renewal of:
(a) a PPL, SPL, BPL and LAPL in the appropriate aircraft category;
(b) class and type ratings for single-pilot, single-engine aircraft, except for single pilot high performance complex aeroplanes; class and group extensions for
balloons and class extensions for sailplanes;

And for the CRI:

FCL.905.CRI CRI — Privileges and conditions
(a) The privileges of a CRI are to instruct for:
(1) the issue, revalidation or renewal of a class or type rating for non-complex non-high performance single-pilot aeroplanes, when the privileges sought by the applicant are to fly in single-pilot operations;
but:

(b) The privileges of a CRI are restricted to the class or type of aeroplane in which the instructor assessment of competence was taken. The privileges of the CRI shall be extended to further classes or types when the CRI has completed, within the last 12 months:
(1) 15 hours flight time as PIC on aeroplanes of the applicable class or type of aeroplane;
(2) one training flight from the right hand seat under the supervision of another CRI or FI qualified for that class or type occupying the other pilot’s seat.
So the CRI is more restricted than the FI!

Home these set up in order to keep everyone who is operating an AOC with the 208 going. ATO certificate is pretty much in the post I'm told. SMS already approved.

The man who has started this is the same guy who started a Seaplane operation with an AOC operating from Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. He's currently using G-EELS. He's also keeping the seaplane rating alive in the uk with the same ATO application.

Not sure what happened to the link, but click on "home" on my previous post and it will take you to their temporary website.

G-EELS...
that aircraft used to visit VGO once a year to pick up a shipment of live eels.

We are also a fully approved ATO and can offer training on a variety of SET on including the Cessna and Finist. In house examiners including myself for both land and sea.

As already mentioned CRI or FI may teach. CRI must meet experience requirements that an FI is exempt. However insurance generally overrides the minima set by the regs. Our instructors need 25hrs on type to teach.

Many thanks for all your answers! Your are correct; a FI is allowed to teach on the Caravan. I just received the confirmation from the Dutch licensing authority.

Friday fastball......What is the requirement to be a CRE on a SET then?

BillieBob 8th Feb 2014 11:22

Same as the requirements to be a CRE on any other single pilot, non-complex, non-high performance aeroplane - Hold or have held a professional licence, have 500 hours total flight time on aeroplanes and a CRI certificate for the applicable type.

Manual Reversion 8th Feb 2014 18:34

Then if you're not already a CRE, apply to CAA for examiner authorisation ( credit card). Do examiner standardisation course (credit card). Do check with CAA staff examiner watching as there is no CAA staff examiner with Cessna SET rating and they can't just climb in and have a go like the old days!

I'm currently looking to extend my CRI (SEP) priviledges to include Cessna SET. The CAA guided me to form SRG1133 which seems to say that the 1 hour 'training flight' from the righthand seat has to be an approved course at an ATO.

Has anyone else with an EASA license been through this process?

justasmallfire 4th Mar 2014 16:02

@moona Refer to Whopity's post above on CRI privileges ,you will need 15 hours on class to teach aswell as rating.

moona 4th Mar 2014 16:51

Yeah that's fine I have 350 hours on class. I was more wondering if there is actually an ATO which has an approved course for the '1 hour training flight'.

Anybody out there who has upgraded CRI (SEP) to CRI (Cessna SET)?

A friend of mine had a JAR license with CRI rating which said 'CRI SE' so it looks like the class restriction came in with EASA licenses.

S-Works 4th Mar 2014 17:14

The CAA will reissue your licence with the Cessna SET specifically listed under the CRI privileges once you have done the flight. I can do this flight for you.
