Inguinal Hernia

Has anybody out there had surgery for an inguinal hernia? If so then how long did it take for your medical to be reinstated? The consultant who I went to see thought that I could be driving again after a week, but a nice lady at the CAA has just told me to expect to be off work for three to four weeks. Gulp! That's going to mess with my job and students.

PS. I've not chosen the medical forum because she was talking about me having to climb down a ladder in the event of an emergency. I really can't see this happening in a C152.

I don't speak with any great knowledge of the matter - but I would ask my AME for his view. The way I read CAP 804:

MED.A.20 Decrease in medical fitness
...
(b) In addition, licence holders shall, without undue delay, seek aero-medical advice when they:
(1) have undergone a surgical operation or invasive procedure;
...
(c) In these cases:
(1) holders of class 1 and class 2 medical certificates shall seek the advice of an AeMC or AME. The AeMC or AME shall assess the medical fitness of the licence holder and decide whether they are fit to resume the exercise of their privileges;
...

is that all you need is for any AME to say you're fit to return to flying.

If that hurts financially then I suggest you don't break your femur! :ok:

I would really think that the medical forum would be a better place to ask - despite what the nice lady said.

Flying After Hernia Surgery

I underwent the simultaneous repair of inguinal and umbilical hernias during May 11. Avmed at CASA ruled that resumption of flying was to be determined by the surgeon.

That worthy said "no driving for two weeks and no flying as PIC for six weeks". Worked for me.
