How many FI's out there?
 

I'm curious to know how many Flight Instructors there are in the UK, especially broken down into single engine and multi engine instructors. Someone out there will have the stats. Enlighten me........

The statistics show around 300 FI ratings issued per year. Assuming a flying career of 25 years that means there are around 7500 holders of FI ratings. Many will be dormant, but it is probably a reasonable estimate that there will be between 2000 and 3000 valid FI ratings.

It is interesting to note there has been an increase in the number of FI ratings issued in the last 3 years. It is not possible to accurately determine the number of ME instructors as they are combined with CRIs and TRIs. Probably quite a low percentage.

Interesting documents from the CAA. So how I understand it, in 2007-2008, 1331 JAR CPL(A)'s where issued and 202 Instructor ratings for CPL(A) holders where issued. There must be a massive amount of cpl holders with out a flying job, the 2008-2009 statistic sheet is going to be really interesting.

So if there is roughly between 2000-3000 FI's in the UK, how many FTO's is there?

With 12 Reg Facilities per page and 40 pages looks like around 480 RFs

Who Gets work.............

Yes - it would be interesting to see how many are type rated on a multi crew airliner :sad:

How many instructors are active, where i am there are 5 fixed wing instructors spread across 3 schools.
How many airfields do regular flight training..50 ish.

Would be suprised if theres more than 400 odd full time active instructors not counting the big commercial schools.

I renewed my FI rating in the last 3 years, and just managed to scrape 12 hours P1 in the last year to renew my SEP. No prizes for guessing that the day job is on a 757. I'll probably renew it again in 2011

Quite a few airline pilots who came from a GA and instructing background keep the rating current, or renew it after many years; however they don't do an awful lot of instructing.

Several of the Capts I've flown with over the years have specifically renewed the rating to teach their children to fly.

Why no mention of Microlight NPPLs in the tables?

Or is it that NPPL (A) are actually NPPL (M) rather than NPPL (SSEA)?

It looks as though a quarter of all new ab initio licences are microlights, with three quarters light aircraft.

So how many microlight instructors? Number of microlight instructor ratings on NPPLs issued is not given either, just microlight AFI and FI on the old PPL(A).
