TMG AFI's / FIs

Are there any TMG rated instructors out there? We own a Falke SF25c motor glider providing air experience flights for Scouts most weekends throughout the summer. Instructors seem to be at a premium! Anyone out there interested. Pm me for details.

Yes, but unfortunately no free time to help you out. TMG instructors are an extremely rare breed.

Does it have to be an instructor? If you are really stuck, any NPPL holder can have differences training from SEP (Or SSEA or whatever the NPPL world call it) to TMG without a formal test. Obviously this would mean that the passenger can receive no instruction or 'hands on' control but it would at least help towards air experience flights.

If someone holds a JAR FCL PPL(A) then they need a formal skills test to add the TMG rating to their license.

If you are looking for volunteers to fly I think you will be hard pushed to find instructors to work for free (I could be, and perhaps hope Im wrong) but if you can offer free flying then an NPPL or PPL holder might be your best hope.

Hope it works out for you

So who pays for the flight?

If you are really stuck, any NPPL holder can have differences training from SEP (Or SSEA or whatever the NPPL world call it) to TMG without a formal test.
A NPPL holder with SSEA Class Rating who wishes to include a SLMG (not TMG) Class Rating in his/her licence shall:

a. Produce the NPPL (SSEA);

b. Produce log book evidence of having satisfactorily completed conversion training with a SLMG Instructor on self-launching motor gliders;

c. Hold a valid NPPL Medical Declaration or JAA Class 1 or 2 medical certificate.
A SLMG is ‘an aircraft with the characteristics of a non power driven glider and which is fitted with one or more power units which is designed or intended to take off under its own power’, whereas a TMG is ‘a motor glider having a certificate of airworthiness issued or accepted by a JAA Member State having an integrally mounted, non retractable engine and a non retractable propeller. The SF25C is classified as both a SLMG and TMG.

However, in the UK for licensing purposes there is no distinction between SLMG and TMG aircraft. UK issued licence holders with a valid SLMG or TMG rating can fly any motor glider (SLMG and TMG).

For NPPL holders, hours flown in a SLMG or SSEA may count towards the revalidation of both Class Ratings; for JAR-FCL PPL(A) holders, hours flown in a TMG or SEP may count towards the revalidation of both Class Ratings. However, hours flown using SLMG privileges included in the JAR-FCL SEP Class Rating (assuming relevant conversion training has been conducted) will not count towards SEP Class Rating revalidation.

Where is this glider?

TMG

The aircraft is a Falke SF25c and a TMG in the true definition. Based at Gransden lodge- home of Cambridge Gliding Centre. Because scouts pay £35.00 for their day course, which includes a 20min air ex flight, the flight must be conducted by either a Mg rated BGA instructor or an AFI/FI with TMG . Or have I got it all wrong?

BEagle 21st Apr 2009 11:34

Perhaps you should check with the BGA?

Any MG instructor would seem to fit the bill if the aim is to conduct Air Experience flights.

If it's a 20 minute air ex flight, ie, Bloggs gets in, Bloggs flys for 20 mins, Bloggs gets out, sounds like anyone with a JAR-PPL(TMG) or NPPL(SLMG) rating could do this, as long as they are not accepting renumeration for said flying (and are suitably insured for the risk, perhaps!?) - after all, they're not instructing, but taking Bloggs for a 20 min jolly. I'm sure one of these guys would snap up the free flying!

I would have your arm off, however do not hold a PPL(TMG) or NPPL(SLMG) as yet, only an Air Cadet's Instructor Rating :{

Which reminds me, does anyone know (apart from OSF) where's good to convert Vigilant hours to PPL(TMG) :}

Gransden lodge is not a licensed aerodrome therefore you cannot conduct trial lessons in a TMG. You could do it under the BGA Exeption http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/ors4_725.pdf using a MGIR flying an SLMG

Unfortunately as payment is made for the purpose of the flight

scouts pay £35.00 for their day course, which includes a 20min air ex flight
It becomes either a Public Transport flight (not allowed), or an aerial work flight i.e. a trial lesson which can only be conducted in this instance by an SLMG instructor at a listed site.

Commonly known as illegal public transport! Unless the pilot shares the cost of the flight!http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/1196/20071...PRCampaign.pdf
