FAA CFI to JAA FI
 

Suppose someone had 2000 hours of instruction given including PPL, IR, CPL, Multi-Engine and perhaps also some full motion biz-jet instruction too, and an FAA ATPL. Having completed the 14 JAA ATPL exams and the ATPL skills test, what would be required to to get the same instructing priviledges in JAA-land? Is any allowance given for all the FAA instruction given, in terms of minimum requirements?

when I did it : only 15 hours of flight training and half of the ground school hours , 1 flight test, still despite my 700 hrs instructing I was issued a restricetd FI for the next 100hrs instructing.

no credit to be FI instrument and me , I had to do the 5 hours for ifr and 5 hours for me plus the 2 flight tests, this after the 100 hrs.

Crazy, maybe, but them's the hoops you've got to jump through. You'll find that the FIC instructor and FIE will take a relatively pragmatic approach to your situation though.

IIRC going the otherway is not just a paperwork exercise either!

That sounds like you have a multicrew IR so if you want a single pilot IR thats another test you will have to do.

Well, to be honest, I was just posting a theoretical question, I currently posses an FAA Commercial Single & Multi, with an IR and I am just finishing up my CFI rating. I am just trying to establish what I am looking at for my planned return to the UK in the next few years.

Once I have the minimums required for an FAA ATP I will go ahead and do that, closely followed by self-study for the JAA ATPL written exams. There is a 50% chance I will be doing my FAA ATP at the same time as a biz-jet TR. As I understand it, the ATPL conversion requires me to do the skills test in the same type in order to carry over the TR, otherwise I do it in a light twin and have no TR on my JAA ATPL. I did not realise that there are different types of IR you can do under JAA, the FAA IR is done as a single pilot, but is equally valid in a multi crew environment. So I might have to do two different types of IR skills test, Sindle Pilot and Multi Crew, before starting the different FI courses. Is this correct?

Maybe the instructor conversion isn't as worth it as I originally thought...

A new text from Lasors 2009 section H1.6 stating that " The supervisory restrictions will be lifted when and only when the supervising instructor is prepared to recommend their removal. The applicant must also have the necessary instructing experience set out in Section H1.4. However where the supervising instructor is prepared to make the recommendation, instructing experience gained outside of the JAR-FCL environment may be accepted towards meeting the minimum instructing requirements provided that the experience can be independently corroborated.
As corroboration PLD would normally expect to receive a letter on school stationery from the Head of Training / Chief Flying Instructor where instructing outside of the JAR-FCL environment took place confirming the details of the instructing experience claimed by the applicant."

So providing enough corroborated experience (detail of every solo you supervised, students name and licence#, exam dates, passing rates) and letters from CFI/head of training, you should be able to get an FI unrestricted, no applied instruments restriction removed (IFI) and even night restiction removed, as long as your FIC agree to sign off your restrictions.

That is all new to the CAA, so i don't know yet (waiting for the result myself) how FCL will interpret it.

Bristow Academy in Florida train FAA CFI's who have 500hrs or more for the JAA FI (Helicopters by the way). They do a modified course(30hrs of ground and 15hrs of flying) along with the guys who have come through from the JAA side. These guys get a special authorisation from the UK CAA to train JAA students. They are also unrestricted, so they can start with the CPL students straight away.

They only do this for the guys they want on the JAA side by the way!!! They don't train outside students.

Anybody been through this conversion recently ?

You cannot get a JAA ATPL without 500 hours Multi-pilot time and that requires a MP Type Rating.The latest LASORS is 2008, 2 years out of date!
