CAA/EASA FI renewal admin fee?

Flying Instructors & Examiners A place for instructors to communicate with one another because some of them get a bit tired of the attitude that instructing is the lowest form of aviation, as seems to prevail on some of the other forums!

CAA/EASA FI renewal admin fee?

Hi,

I've been asked by the CAA for £85 to have my FI renewal put on my EASA licence when submitting the paperwork.

Is this a change, I cant remember ever having to pay for this under JAR?

If you've let it lapse and have a new EASA licence, then that's the UK price for Eurorocaracy! It can only get worse.

There are a lot of people who followed the CAA's bad advice and unnecessarily converted National licences to JAA licences, only to discover that within a few months they needed to change to an EASA licence and were charged yet again. £85 is cheap compared to some of the other charges that have been levied.

My FI had only just lapsed when I applied for my EASA licence.

I renewed my FI on my CAA licence during the 7 months it took them to process my EASA application, for which off course they charged handsomely!

Cost of FI renewal:-
£220 Flight Test examiner Fee
£220 Flight test aircraft hire
£275 Seminar fee
£85 CAA EASA fee to put on licence

Thats £800 to renew my FI. (and 3 days of my time).

I've had this rating for >20yrs but question if I will renew again.

FI (inc IMC) on EASA Licence

I am right in the middle of this process. I sent everything off in June and have had 2 problems, so the CAA still have my paperwork (they sent it all back the first time - which was my fault - but they posted it to the wrong address and it took me a month to get it back).

I now find that they need a current Class 1 medical - fair enough I had one done about 7 months ago - but it has now lapsed to a Class 2. So I had to take another half day off work yesterday to go and have another one done. (Only needing Class 2 for FI work).

I have also shelled out for the seminar and the flight with examiner etc. etc.

Woe is me !

I think the clue is to change your State of Licence issue to one who does not charge so much. I hear business is brisk at the IAA!

Are you sure it lapsed to class 2? My class 1 gives 6 months for single pilot commercial operations carrying passengers and 12 months for class 1 other commercial operations. So in month 7 it is still a valid class 1.

EASA Licence Recieved !

Well I did get my new licence today - delivered to the flat in KL that I lived in 2 years ago - although the letter inside was addressed correctly (!?).

After ringing FedEx to find out how my package could possibly have been delivered and signed for despite me knowing absolutely nothing about it, I ran back to my old flat (not far away thankfully). The maid that answered the door only spoke Bahasa Melayu (in which I am less than fluent) so trying to convince her that the package that I knew had been delivered to that address 2 hours ago was not for that apartment but was in fact mine was not too easy.............

So far, so bad.

And now my licence; in the Remarks and Restrictions against FI it states "Restricted/FCL.905.FI applies as in (a)/(b)/(e)/(g)/(g)IR(R))"

I have checked in CAP804 but cannot see whether this does actually entitle me to teach instrument to IMC level in the UK. I kind of suspect it does from the above, but am not certain.

Can anyone help ?

There is normally a yellow piece of paper in the licence with the decode.
Item (g) allows you to instruct for an IR and item (g) IR/R allows you to instruct for the IMC.

Angry

I think it's now £89 for an FI(A) renewal. Of course any fee is totally unjustified as all the verification can be completed by the FI examiner and it doesn't need an admin clerk to check through.

Also the fee has increased by 6% in less than a year - that's twice the government consumer price index !

But only if it requires action by the CAA. If the rating is still in the licence it can be renewed by the FIE.
