Wartime description of an inverted spin?

I am just re-reading a 1996 letter from FLTLT John Piper DFC who says in it he did four reverse spins in a Brewster Buffalo at Singapore. Others tried and bailed out. He made it.

What is a reverse spin ? A tail slide spinning ?

He probably meant to say "inverted spin." "Inverted" = upside down.
