Handley Page HP 88

Does anyone have an official reference detailing the correct reasons for the accident to the above aircraft on 26th August 1951. There are many theories to be found on the web and in various enthusiasts aircraft books, and they all seem to differ. Thanks very much.

Charlwood : Have you read "British Experimental Turbojet Aircraft" ?

Page 106 reports the conflicting evidence given at the inquest, from which it appears that no definite conclusion was reached.

This is taken from UK Flight Testing Accidents 1940-71 by Derek Collier Webb and published by Air Britain.

Collier Webb quotes his reference as 'AIB Reports Various - Contained in PRO AVIA/5 Folders Nos 20-38'

I must say having a streaming cold and so being banned from the family festivities has led to a super day!

HP 88 Accident

Gentlemen - Thank you both for your very prompt and interesting messages. I shall check the references upon my return to the UK in June.

It is amazing how, despite being a eager 'aviation yoof' some events passed me by completely (yes, I know - it is happening more at this age:)). I don't think I was ever aware of this a/c. I have found a picture of the beast at Handley Page H.P.88. and a silhouette at The Handley Page HP.88, based on the fuselage for the Attacker jet fighter from Supermarine - Image details (both with due acknowledgements).

Best wishes to JF for a speedy recovery - I trust you had your jabs?

Edited for stoopid typo!

Thanks for drawing my attention to British Experimental Turbojet Aircraft by Barry Jones. My local library managed to interloan me a copy. I must admit to finding the book a little shallow and am glad that I did not buy a copy. MoS ARC Report 3094 has proved to be very illuminating. As mentioned previously, I think that the National Archives will be able to provide the answers to my questions.
Regards.
