Sea Harrier display, 25 th Anniversary
 

The only flyable ex R.N. Sea Harrier, now owned by an ex- U.S. Marines then Test Pilot, Art Nalls, is having trouble with the CAA to come over for the Falklands 25th anniversary display - this would be the only Sea Harrier present, which is pretty strange considering their contribution & success !

They also need a sponsor, but the Navy seems too ashamed of not having a Seajet even in their Historic Flight so apparently is trying to block it - shame on you !

Please add to this thread as something to present to the government...

As you say, this is shameful. The Shar would have represent both Shar and Harrier GR3 and added depth to the events.

Perhaps you should mention this in the Military Aircrew forum?

Also, have you seen this?

Don't blame the CAA for not allowing any type of Harrier over Central London, this decision is made by the military based on engine reliabilty and also zero glide performance, that's why Hawks can overfly London, but sadly a Harrier can't.

Memory is a bit hazy here, but didn't a Harrier once use a disused coalyard near Victoria station, around 1969 I think. Early version too, with perhaps a less reliable engine. That was a record attempt, so that's all right then.

Edited to add : A quick Google provides a link to this document which states it was indeed 1969, but a coal yard at Kings Cross. Page 38 has a photograph of the event.

Close; it was actually St Pancras; the RAF erected a sign proclaiming it 'RAF St Pancras'. It was for the London - New York race; the FAA are probably jealous because they had to use a Phantom out of Wisley which blew its tyres every touchdown!

Well they seem to have approved the Vulcan, which while having 4 engines is still dodgy !

As for Hawks, where exactly are they supposed to glide to,
Hyde Park ?

For photo's of the St Pancras take-off, taken long before my time ( which race incidentally the Harrier won ) and other shots including the 1990's Battle of Britain anniversary flypast over Buck House at -seem to remember Spitfires etc being single engined - pics available if you contact me at [email protected]

There may be no SHAR flypast but there is an unofficial Sea Harrier reunion planned for 4 May details here:

An annual Sea Harrier Bash is envisioned. This will comprise an informal RV at a suitable inner London boozer on the Friday before the Army-Navy Rugby game each year. In 2007 this means that all ex-Sea Harrier pilots, Air Engineers, Freddies and Sqn Staff Officers are invited to saunter along on Friday 4th May from 1800 onward for beer, dits and similar.
