Contingency Power
Can anyone assist with an orignal source document, or military or civil regulation that defines the term "Contingency Power" as relates turbine engine operation in twin engine helicopters?

The FAA rejected use of the term "contingency power" a few years ago.
The US Army defines it as OEI 2.5 min power in ADS-40A. I think that it may be an official term in Europe, but don't have access to those pubs right now. |
Thank you for your post Greg. Unfortunately ADS-40A does not provide historical footnotes. I am looking for a source document; something that might contain the logic or thought process by which it came to be. Have you run across anything like that?

Rich, I did find some reference in the UK Def Stan 00-970 (the section on powerplants) to Contingency power, but it was sporadic and didn't have full definitions. However, there are obsolete versions at the website as well. I haven't checked them, but if that standard suffices you might be able to find a definition.

Thank you Matthew. I will see if I can find an original copy of UK Def Stan 00-970. I hadn't expected the search for the origin of this term of art to be so difficult.

Contingency Power
The FAA has approved a contingency power rating. The S-76C+ Type Design incorporates a feature to allow both engines to exceed normal power rating based on collective application rate and/or Nr decay. The power rating was published as a Special Condition in the Federal Register prior to the Amended Type Design approval.

Contingency Power
Concorde engines had contingency ratings and I think the TSS certification regulations had relevant definitions. However I do not know where you might find a set of TSS now.
