Slow down on a320

Hi there

Newbie here. I have a question regarding fuel use on an a320 sector 3.5 hours long. Would it save much fuel if the sector was flown at a Lower cruise speed so it was flown over 4 hours? I know there will be additional costs such as crew time and a negative impact on aircraft utilisation but just interested in whether it would save fuel, use more fuel or negligible effect.

Many thanks.

Depends ...

If it was already planned at economical "Long range cruise" speed then slowing down any further will use more fuel. If it was planned at a high speed then slowing down will save quite a bit.
